Hayden Springer was out of PGA Tour starts when he missed the cut in Scottsdale. But the guy is resilient--he shot a 66 and survived a playoff to become one of 4 players from a 70-player field who qualified for this week's Mexico Open.

Springer birdies 4 of his last 5 to get into the top 20 at the halfway mark in Mexico.

Meanwhile the Euro Tour visits Kenya, where 4 former Frogs make the cut, led by Jacob Skov Olesen at T5.

TCU men and women are both in action today and tomorrow. Both squads have a sixth player competing as an individual (Roden for the men; Dimitrova for the women).

The women are on the course in Houston for the Chevron Collegiate, which has a strong field including top-ranked Arkansas.

The men are one of just two top-50 teams in the field at the Lake Las Vegas Invitational. Another opportunity for them to earn a trophy and strengthen their overall record with an eye toward qualifying for the post-season.

TCU women had a good opening round this a.m. (-5) and a great second round this p.m. -- 68-69-69-69 (-13, which I think is not far off the school record in relation to par). They are in 2nd place, 5 shots back of A&M and 6 shots ahead of #1 Arkansas and #12 Mississippi State. This is a good team.

Individually, Sofia Barroso Sá and Camille Min-Gaultier are both T6 and Meagan Winans is T12.

The men did not have as good a start. I get frustrated when a guy posts a quad on the first hole of a tournament. I get more frustrated when that guy's score ends up as a counter (with only 1 birdie). Be ready, and if you're not sure you have it in warm up, club down and make sure you put it in play on the opener.

Good news is that the team has two more rounds to make up ground on a bunch of middling teams.

Just after making the turn in their final round in Houston, TCU has caught A&M and opened up a 3-shot lead on the Aggies, with a 7-shot lead on #1 Arkansas. Camille Min-Gaultier is T2 individually at -10, two shots back of the leader.

Frogs win in Houston by 9 over A&M and by 10 over top-ranked Arkansas--which was 52-2 on the year. The Frogs topped their -14 total from yesterday with -15 today (-34 for the event, which likely sets a TCU record for 54-hole score in relation to par). Min-Gaultier shot a 7-under 65 to finish solo 2nd at -13; Sofia Barroso Sá finished T3 at -10. Megan Winans finished T12.

Congrats to the TCU women!

Also some credit to the men today, who leapfrog 6 teams to get into 6th place in Las Vegas. Jack Beauchamp made six birdies and an eagle on his way to a 65, and Charlie Wylie added a 67 -- they are both now in the top 20. The team might have a shot at a top-3 finish tomorrow.

TCU men drop a spot and finish 7th in Las Vegas, 33 shots back of winner Long Beach State. The expected benefit of entering a weak-field event is padding your record to make sure you finish over .500 and in the pool for a post-season invite. The Frogs did push their record over .500 for the first time this season (now 46-45-1), but they were hoping for much more.

The risk of a weak-field event is the chance of getting beat by #115 Stetson and #149 Northern Illinois. That will push TCU's rank down considerably and leave a hill to climb to make the NCAAs.

I can sort of understand Stetson, it's in Florida and they probably generally get some decent players, but how is TCU getting beat by Northern Illinois in golf?

Four Frogs in the NCAA women's top 100 rankings. I don't recall TCU having even 3 before. Congrats!

Consistent across-the-board play is so big in college golf. TCU often finds itself against teams that post scores like 66-69-72-75-78. TCU is more likely to post 69-70-71-72-73. But those produce the same count-4 score, the latter is less vulnerable to a bad hole late, and it also wins more in match play.

#13 TCU is back in action today through Tuesday in Tucson at the Mountainview Invitational. After the first round, the Frogs are 2nd in the 14-team field, one shot back of Oklahoma and 6 shots up on the rest of the field. Camille Min-Gaultier is T2; Kirstin Angosta is T6.

High scores today in Tucson; winds were up over 15 mph, and I think Arizona and Kansas State benefited from early tee times--they were off an hour before the Frogs. Those two teams lead, but TCU is just 2 back. Hopefully the pairings are adjusted for the final round based on standings (they weren't today for some reason...or no reason).

Camille Min-Gautier is T3; one of four players in red figures. Kirstin Angosta is T5 at Even.

TCU women finish third in Tucson, a shot back of Arizona and 10 back of Kansas State. Story of the tournament was K State's Carla Bernat, who was the highest-ranked individual in the field and who won by 9, comprising the whole margin of victory.

TCU was again paired with Miami and Mizzou, which finished 12th and 7th, where the other 3 top teams played with one another for the third straight day, per the pairings. A little gamesmanship from host K State, maybe.

The Preserve at Saddlebrooke is a keep-it-between-the-houses course, which may not have fit everyone's eye. Still, Camille Min-Gaultier finished T2 -- another fine outing in a year full of them. Kirstin Angosta finished T4 and Meagan Winans T11.

A third-place finish wasn't what the Frogs were looking for, but it won't hurt them much in the rankings -- they'll maybe drop a spot or two.
