TCU men are on the course at Houston Oaks in Hockley for the Big 12 Match Play. Good for TCU to get back in play and put the last event behind them.

And in the early going, the Frogs (seeded 12th) have a small lead over 5-seed Colorado. Other teams in TCU's pool are Tech (4 seed) and Baylor (13 seed). Top 2 teams team advances to semis following round-robin play.

TCU is playing Roden, Pagdin, T Wilt, Wylie and Beauchamp. I think Dial may be the available sub.

Four of five first-round matches go to the 18th hole...and the Frogs win all of them, for a 5-0 sweep of Colorado. A couple of the guys whittled away leads but stemmed the bleeding at the end. Scott Rodin never led in his match until the final hole. Joe Pagdin won the last two holes to flip his match.

Nice bounce-back for the men.

After losing 2-3 to Tech on the afternoon of Day 1, TCU men came into Day 2 needing a tie or win against Baylor and a loss by Tech to Colorado to advance to the semis. Colorado held up their end of the bargain, and while TCU trailed Baylor most of the morning, the Frogs came to the last hole with two matches tied and chance to top the pool if they could win one and halve the other.

Alas, the Frogs halved one and lost the other. One match later, 13-seed Baylor takes down top-seed Arizona State to make the championship match (despite having lost more holes than they won for the week), while TCU finds itself losing the 11th-place match when Houston flips 3 individual matches over the last five holes. A total collapse.

Ifs and buts.

Stefano Mazzoli came charging home with a final-round 64 to earn a backdoor top 10 in the Euro Challenge Tour's event in Hainan, China. It was his third top-10 finish in his last five starts, and it pushed him up to 41st in the season points standings (from 55th). After next week's event in Hangzhou, the top 45 qualify for the season-ending event in Mallorca, which keeps the door open for promotion to the DP World Tour. So, a timely moment for Mazzoli to go low. He also banks another 11,000 euros, which ain't nothin when grinding on the smaller tours.

Update: Stefano was apparently confident enough of his status that he skipped the tourney in Hangzhou. Possibly getting readjusted to European time and getting an early look at the course in Mallorca.

TCU women were a shot back of Oklahoma after round 1 and are tied with Houston for first at -14 after round 2 at Kissing Tree. Three Frogs are in the top 10 individually: Kirstin Angosta (T2, two shots back), Camille Min-Gautier (T4, three back) and Sofie Dimitrova (T7, playing as an individual).

They'll all be competing for trophies on Monday. This is a solid team.

Frogs lead Oklahoma by 3 and Houston by 4 coming down the stretch in San Marcos. Camille Min-Gautier is in a 3-way tie for the individual lead at -9, with Kirstin Angosta 2 shots back.

Three holes left: Frogs up by 2 over OU and 4 over UH. Min-Gautier is still tied for the individual lead; Angosta is one shot back.

Frogs win! Kirstin Angosta birdies 3 of her final 4 holes to lift the Frogs to a 1-shot victory over Houston (OU finished another shot back).

Angosta's charge also lifted her to the individual title by a shot over Min-Gautier and 4 others. Sofie Dimitrova also earned a top-10 finish.

Congrats to the Frogs!

Having advanced through Stage 1 of the LPGA's Q Series in August, former Frogs Lois Lau, Sabrina Iqbal and Greta Bruner take their next step toward tour status this week at Plantation Golf & Country Club in Venice, Fla. They'll be playing 72 holes over two courses with approximately 45 of the roughly 175 players advancing to the final stage, and all finishers earning Symetra Tour status.

Lois and Greta are on the course for round 1; Sabrina plays this p.m. with current NCAA individual champ Adela Cernousek.

Through 2 rounds, Sabrina Iqbal is +2, Greta Bruner is +3 and Lois Lau is +5. That has them 5, 6, and 8 shots off the cutline to advance to Stage 3 (now announced as the top 35 and ties). Since that cutline is already under par at the halfway mark, it could go lower. So, the Frogs will need a couple of special rounds to get into that group--69-69 might do it for Sabrina.

Update: None of the 3 advanced, but we'll look forward to seeing them all on the Symetra Tour next season.

The TCU women didn't have a great day yesterday. But it speaks to the depth of talent on this team that they could survive a 75 & 76 from their #1 & 2 players and still be within 8 shots of the tournament lead. They got 70-70-74 from players 3-4-5 in breezy conditions.

Then, when the wind picked up to 20 mph in the afternoon and no one in the field broke 70, the Frogs hung tough and stayed within single digits of the lead. No Frogs were in the individual top 10, but six were in the top 25 of a 60-player field. That's a total team effort.

Sofia Barroso Sa had her score dropped in round 2. That's not something I typically point out by name, but it's just her second non-countable score in 78 rounds of team play over 3 seasons. That's an unbelievable run of consistency. She hasn't been TCU's low scorer in any event this season, but having a player on the squad who almost never has a bad round is gold.

With six solid players, someone talented is always left out of a starting spot, and it's not unusual to see them play well as an individual with something to prove. Last week Sophie Dimitrova turned that situation into a top-10 finish. This week, Gracie McGovern posted TCU's second-best score through 2 rounds. Glad to see her respond in that spot. Megan Winans posted the Frogs' best score, playing the par-5s in five under yesterday.

Frogs are sixth as a team going into round 3, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them move into the top 3 today.

TCU women wrap up their fall slate with a respectable 4th-place finish. Two of the three teams ahead of them were the two top-20 teams in the field, and the Frogs were within 9 shots of both.

TCU did it without any of their starters finishing in the top 10...but 4 of them finished top 20: Winans (+4), Angosta (+5), Sa (+5), Min-Gautier (+5).

TCU did have a top-10 finisher: Gracie McGovern (T10), playing as an individual. She earned her first career top 10 and her first sub-70 college round today. (But I think a bogey on her final hole prevented her from earning her bag.) A top recruit, Gracie has had a slow start, averaging 76.0 in her first two events and picking up a DQ (I think) in one round of her third.

Her play has picked up since; she's averaged 71.6 over her last 8 rounds. But after Dimitrova beat her by 9 last week playing as an individual, I wasn't surprised to see McGovern out of the starting 5 this week. It may have lit a fire; Gracie beat Sofie by 10 this week.

That kind of stuff has to drive coaches bonkers--had McGovern's scores been available for the team, the Frogs would have finished T2. But who knows what she would have shot playing as a starter. On balance, internal competition helps keep everyone sharper.

@calisuperfrog was among those who got out to see the Frogs in action. Perhaps some recruits did as well ahead of signing day. Anyone else get a chance to see them play at Ridglea? Let us know what you thought.

I've been remiss in not tracking with the TCU men in their final tournament of the fall: the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational in Maui. Short answer is that the Frogs shot -32 and finished T6 in a 21-team field. Jack Beauchamp finished T7 individually to lead the Frogs.

It's a good finish--though not unexpected, given that TCU was projected as the 5th-best team in a relatively weak field.

Wait, you ask, how can TCU, with its 11-31 record going into Maui, have been projected as a high finisher? I'm not sure, but TCU is #48, probably based on having beaten #7 North Carolina and a couple of other solid teams at Sahalee (or Sa-hallway, as the Bryan brothers recently called it).

That means that TCU could still have a chance to make the NCAAs if they can get their record over .500 by year end, and large-field tournaments like this are designed to help teams get in a position just that. The Frogs left Maui with a 25-34-1 record, which gives them hope heading into spring.

Also helping grow confidence is seeing a bunch of red on the board. Beauchamp had a round of 64, Toby Wilt a 65 and Joe Pagdin a 66. Yesterday the Frogs posted 65-68-69-69. Staying within 10 shots of #2-ranked OU is also encouraging (a 46-shot improvement from Colonial).

Frogs are off now until February, when they'll tee it up next in Puerto Rico.

TCU hall of famer Angela Stanford played her final event as a full-time LPGA tour player this week. Three shots off the cut line with 5 holes to play in round 2, Angela made a pair of birdies down the stretch, but came to the 18th needing another. Then this:

She went on to finish T26. Stanford finishes her final full-time season 20th on the LPGA career money list, having earned $12.3M in 537 career starts.

This Wednesday is signing day for non-football sports. A quick Google search notes a couple of commits expected to sign for the TCU men: Minnesota junior player of the year Sam Udovich and Evan Hofferkamp of The Woodlands. Udovich has won at least two AJGA events, including one in Montana in August where he posted -11 over 54 holes.

Will look forward to seeing them come through and other signees for the men and women.

Update: TCU men announce the signings of Udovich and Hofferkamp. Nothing posted yet by the TCU women. With only one senior on the roster, they could look to fill that slot through the portal.

TCU men and TCU women each announce a signee today.

For the men, Nathan Miller of Dallas joins yesterday's signees Sam Udovich and Evan Hofferkamp. Miller had a pair of top 10s on the AJGA circuit this summer, with a stroke average of 73.6.

For the women, Yvette O'Brien of Connecticut is the first signee for 2025. She has posted three straight top-5 AJGA finishes with a summer stroke average of 72.5.

Welcome to the new Frogs!

TCU golf and soccer strength and conditioning coach Michael Wood was recognized by golf digest as a top fitness instructor in the country. Huge honor for woody. As an aside…I’m on the instructors list so in Fort Worth work with woody then work with me and you are working with one of the best combinations in the country for your golf game.

Congrats to Michael Wood--and to you too, @First Tee Frog! Here's the best-in-Texas instructors list he was referring to. First Tee is better than Hal Sutton...and within striking distance of a guy I played with long ago on the Sun Country PGA junior circuit--Silver City's favorite son, Cameron Doan.

Hayden Springer had a bad final round on Bermuda, +4 on the day to fall 29 spots into a tie for 37th. $31,400 payday.
He was within 3 of the lead yesterday. He's had 4 top 10 finishes this year though.

That's tough. Hayden was looking to stay in the top 125 to hang onto his Tour card for next season. A top-10 would have given him some cushion. Instead, he drops from 125 to 128, switching spots with YouTube star Wesley Bryan. Springer has one event remaining to avoid a return to Q School.
