The Man Behind The Curtain
First two episodes of Skeleton Crew are out. Not bad at all….very Goonies/80s feel to it. You could easily watch this with your kids for nice family time.

That said, the main kid character, Wim, suuuuucks. Most annoying kid character in quite a while.
Been hearing good things about that show. I’m going to give it a try this weekend with my 14yo son. Hope it can rekindle his interest in Star Wars after the terrible Obi Wan series. He was just wanting to start reading the expanded universe books (starting with Zahn’s trilogy) but after we watched that series he lost interest.

We watched the first two episodes the other night. I enjoyed it but man you nailed it on the Wim character. The next most annoying character is his Dad.

The girls characters are cool and likable though as is the little sidekick dude

Good news is Andor is back this year

I was happily surprised how well Mandalorian was. Andor really got my attention.

Season 1 and 2 were good, but season 3 was a dud. Once they got rid of Cara Dune they lost a lot of momentum and heart. I was looking forward to her Rangers series before Disney fired Gina as I liked what Favreau was building and the story arcs he was hinting at expanding in future shows.

On a different note—and I realize I'm late to this party—the wife and I just finished watching the Fallout series on Prime. My wife used to play the original game but never got into any of the followups, so any issues with the series straying from the source material wasn't an issue and we really enjoyed the show—even though my wife couldn't stop commenting on Ella Purnell's eyes. The set design and character development was fantastic and helped make the world feel real and grounded. The story pace was great for the most part, with a few flashback scenes noticeably dragging, and the various reveals throughout the season really kept you engaged and wanting to start the next episode. We can't wait for season 2.

Began Skeleton Crew with the Mrs. First episode had to setup the characters and their world, but it began to feel plodding and lethargic until the big reveal at the end. Starting episode 2, hoping it picks up.

Second episode was tighter, better paced, with a nice action scene at the end but I'm having a hard time figuring out which character is supposed to be the main protagonist. You can really tell the writers are leaning into the whole "Goonies in Space" vibe with each of these kids haveing similar character traits to the four kids in the Goonies:

Wim = Mike
KB = Data
Neel = Chunk
Fern = Mouth

However, I don't think the Goonies would have worked well had Mouth took the lead and Data was more of a background character. So, I hope KB has a bigger role in the coming episodes, Wim becomes less of a whiny, gullible dreamer, and Fern stops trying to be the overbearing mother figure. The only one that I think fits the group well is Neel. I really like the character design and the kid voicing him is great. I also appreciated the shorter, 30 minute, runtime of the second episode which was a huge improvement over the plodding pilot.

We're looking forward to episode 3 on Tuesday—even given the rumors—and hope they can stick the landing like Andor.

Wait, what rumors?

I heard episode three is going to be about the parents back on the mystery planet. That would be like having a whole C sub-plot in Goonies showing the parents freak out after their kids don’t come home that night. I don’t really care about the parents at this point, of which we only really saw two (both single?), especially since the droids already stated there are no spaceships allowed on the planet so what exactly are they going to do?

Ahhh didn’t know that. I feel you in that I don’t care about the parents but I would definitely like the show to explore this space suburbia world that we’ve never had in Star Wars. Obviously, there’s some sort of nefarious nature to it so it’ll be interesting to see how they do it all.

They did drop plenty of hints that things aren't what they seem concerning their homeworld, but in an 8 episode series, which we're already 1/4 of the way though, I don't think they did enough to make that a major plot point given the situation the kids were left in at the end of Episode 2 and having just introduced Jude Law. If I were writing this show I'd setup enough hints throughout the 8 episodes to make that a major foreshadow for a season 2, and keep the focus on the kids.
