Prince of Purpoole II

Reigning Smartarse
I saw Wicked a couple days ago. To preface, I’ve seen the musical a couple of times and I’m a fan. I read the book several years ago. The book is very dark and complex. If you read the book, you will wonder “How did they get this whimsical musical from that extremely dark book?”

That being said, the movie adaptation was very good. Very well acted. If you like the musical you will likely enjoy the movie. They stay true to the script and there are cameos by the original broadway leads. Jeff Goldblum is in it and I have not seen him in many movies where he is not excellent. He does a great job in this role as well. The two leads were also very well done. Ariana Grande is super talented. The actress who plays the witch is also very good. I was initially unsure of her being cast as Elpheba, but she was definitely a great choice for the role. My only complaint is that it’s a two parter, so the end leaves you hanging.
I think having read the book with its twists and turns and the way it ties in Baum’s original Wizard of Oz characters and tells the tale from a different perspective is what makes the story so interesting for me.
Overall, I thought it was well done. If you don’t like musicals or you’re unfamiliar with the story line, you may not care for it. I’m not usually a fan of musicals, but, for some reason, this one just clicked with me after reading the book. The dichotomy of the book’s mood and characters vs the musical is interesting. The dichotomy of the story line juxtaposed with the original movie and Baum’s original Wizard of Oz series produces a different angle as well. Combined with the talent of the singers in the musical and the movie, it keeps it engaging.
This is next up for us. Thanks for the heads-up on it being a two part film.

My main concern is that I end up sitting near someone who sings along

You can’t use words like “dichotomy” on a sports forum—especially this season. Knock down those syllables, doc.

I used juxtaposed in the same sentence as dichotomy, so the two big words cancelled each other out.
I love words and am always trying to increase my vocabulary, so I get two emails every day with "words of the day"
I learned this morning that the word "complaisant" exists and was initially horrified that I had been spelling "complacent" wrong my entire life. Then, I was reassured when I found out that they are pronounced exactly the same, have the same origins, but have two different meanings:

Complaisant-generally means being willing to go out of your way to oblige others.
Complacent-generally means self-satisfied or unconcerned.

I almost made it to 60 years old without knowing that fact.

My wife clapped at the end of the movie, which is uncommon for her (and a non-starter for me)
I sat between my wife and daughter and they both know all of the songs, but, thankfully, refrained from singing.
The nice thing about the end was that it occurs at a natural breakpoint, so it does not seem as awkward as it might have. Almost felt like the point where an intermission would have occurred.

Not even close. He was mainly friends with BB's cousins, but said BB was around all the time. Said there are a lot of cranks and quirky folks in Arkansas, but that the Thornton clan was at the peak of those he knew.
Was in reference to a story told once on this forum involving a burly masseuse. I believe the guy was from Arkansas.
