OT - Movies thread

We saw Gladiator II today. I have to say I enjoyed it. I went in thinking it might be bad, possibly terrible so my evaluation may have to do with my expectations but I don’t think so. Definitely give it a look
I watched the original a couple of nights ago. I’ve seen it a half dozen times before, but it’s been at least 15 years.

Maybe it’s because I’m older now, but it really struck me how outstanding the dialogue is. It’s a masterfully written script. Very clean, no wasted words.

It’s a top 2 or 3 movie for me of all time.

Ridley Scott has some amazing films and some bummers.

1967 was an amazing year too.

Cool Hand Luke
The Graduate
The Dirty Dozen
In Cold Blood
In The Heat of the Night
Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner
Cool Hand Luke.... What we have here is a failure to communicate.

Dirty Dozen.... Lee Marvin- I owe you an apology, Colonel. I always thought you were a cold unimaginative officer. But you're.... really quite emotional.

The movie industry sucks today.

In the late 80s from Ft worth, I got a gig-part time from a travel co. out of No Cal Global Enterprise Travel. G.E.T.. this was a part time gig 5-20 hours a week. The mission was to get church groups and graduating HS seniors to travel to MEhico. I had some fun over the next 7-9 years. Our very first trip was to PV. The side trips were scheduled for Palenque. One of the first trips to PV was a reward side trip to palenque a little village of less than 200 11 miles south of PV on the beach. Waterfall's & literal jungle. After 10 minutes of arriving on the beach we were warned with pyrotechnics and loudspeakers, "do not enter this canyon" in spanish but we kept advancing up the canyon. the 4-5 of us kept advancing up the canyon to reach the waterfalls. We realized about 10 minutes of the 3-7 story waterfalls until they forcefully removed us. We were within 1-2 miles of where they were filming Predator, so they wanted us out.

Knew it. Knew they were poking fun at Aledo a bit in Landman with some of the characters.

Most recent episode has Thornton referring to his ex wife as “Aledo’s mother of the year.”

I saw Wicked a couple days ago. To preface, I’ve seen the musical a couple of times and I’m a fan. I read the book several years ago. The book is very dark and complex. If you read the book, you will wonder “How did they get this whimsical musical from that extremely dark book?”

That being said, the movie adaptation was very good. Very well acted. If you like the musical you will likely enjoy the movie. They stay true to the script and there are cameos by the original broadway leads. Jeff Goldblum is in it and I have not seen him in many movies where he is not excellent. He does a great job in this role as well. The two leads were also very well done. Ariana Grande is super talented. The actress who plays the witch is also very good. I was initially unsure of her being cast as Elpheba, but she was definitely a great choice for the role. My only complaint is that it’s a two parter, so the end leaves you hanging.
I think having read the book with its twists and turns and the way it ties in Baum’s original Wizard of Oz characters and tells the tale from a different perspective is what makes the story so interesting for me.
Overall, I thought it was well done. If you don’t like musicals or you’re unfamiliar with the story line, you may not care for it. I’m not usually a fan of musicals, but, for some reason, this one just clicked with me after reading the book. The dichotomy of the book’s mood and characters vs the musical is interesting. The dichotomy of the story line juxtaposed with the original movie and Baum’s original Wizard of Oz series produces a different angle as well. Combined with the talent of the singers in the musical and the movie, it keeps it engaging.
