FWST: A day after being let go, Gary Patterson shows up to work for TCU football

I’m just trying to apply it to any other job. I mean picture the office where you work (assuming you work in an office)….. Someone quits on the spot and storms out today after being told they are being let go at the end of the year but then they show back up to work tomorrow to hang out for a little bit. That’s not even remotely normal.
You have to come back to get your [ Finebaum ]…like your paper weight, favorite pen, your diploma…THE ROSE BOWL TROPHY.

Gotta say I'm with the Moose on this one. But I'll go one step further...it's not just bizarre. It's unacceptable behavior. If you wanted to coach the rest of the season, the opportunity was there. If you did not wish to do that, well....that's your choice. There is no hybrid situation. If you had been doing your job as HEAD coach, the assistants that remain should be more than capable of finalizing and executing on the game plan...or changing it if they desire. That said, I wouldn't have expected anything other than this.
Gotta say I'm not surprised at all that You and Moose would take this position. Never could tell which of you was the bigger sycophant of the other.

Patterson at about 3 on Saturday when we’re already down by 2 touchdowns

Unacceptable for him to come in one extra day? Now if he spends the entire week up there working on the gameplan and practice schedule then sure I'll go along with what you're saying.

Love Head Coach Gary Patterson! He’s a TCU legend and should go out as such. Rarely do long term Head Coaches part company amicably when their departure comes during tough times, I really hope its possible in this case. TCU is very fortunate to have had G.P. as their HC for 20+ years and G.P. is fortunate TCU provided the infrastructure and administration for all their on/off field success. I’m hopeful Coach will embrace his special role as a TCU ambassador, mentor and fan. I hope the University and FN base welcome him with open arms and recognize him as “COACH” eternally!

I personally think when a guy like that who everyone probably looks up to has the attitude he has about even playing college football (we can argue all day about that) it has an impact on the rest of the team. Again, call me an old-fashioned grump. I'm sure he's got some, if not a lot of influence in the locker room and is probably one of the "leaders" on the team. And I honestly don't think he really cares all that much about TCU, or about winning.

He might be a kid you'd want your daughter to marry, I have no idea. But I couldn't care less if he leaves the program because I don't think his presence is really helping anything.
I don't know how it is that you think you have such a full understanding of both Zach's attitude and all of his teammates attitude toward him. In fact everything that we can see during games would seem to point the exact opposite direction of what you're saying. It seems like he loves his teammates and they love him. And I know they love him when he has the ball in his hands.

Furthermore, even if Evans did have a terrible attitude and all off his teammates actually hated him, he's one guy. He's not responsible for any lack of team chemistry. He's only been there 2 years. If you think team chemistry is an issue that's having a negative effect on their ability to win games then I'd look to the players who have been there 4-5 years and the coaches. They're the ones responsible for the culture. Not a 19 or 20 old whose been there for 18 months.

Believe Gary was asked to serve out the rest of the season and he turned it down- perhaps he changed his mind and his assistants may have suggested he stick around. Coach P still cares about this team and everyone on it and it’s success.
Gary is having a private lunch with VB this week. Gonna be offered $2M to be some kinda of Ambassador next year answering directly to VB instead of the Jon Daniels of college football....

Me as well....at any other job when you essentially quit - not only do you not show up the next day...you can't. Everything in Gary's office, TCU's athletic facilities, etc...is TCU's...not Gary's. An inventory should be taken and he given his personal effects. That's it. It's a bummer deal, but that's the way it goes.

It is not normal behavior from Gary or our Athletic Department.
Have no idea what got you to hate him so much

I don't think his teammates hate him at all. Where did I say that? It might be quite the opposite. And I think regardless of how long he's been here, I think he's a leader based simply on his stature coming in here and his talent.

But he does things all the time and people constantly justify it, or make excuses, or look the other way. Even going back to high school, and then his recruitment was about as big a circus as there was in the entire 2020 class. Oh, it goes on everywhere, that's just the way kids are these days, blah, blah, blah. That's BS. Kid goes on Instagram after a game in which we get our ass kicked (that he doesn't play in) and says "us losing don't have s to do with me", makes a not so subtle jab at our starting QB, and talks about how somebody needs to fill his wallet up or something stupid like that......complete with a teammate in the background saying they don't prepare or care. And then it's ah, that's just today's kids, no big deal. We need MORE guys like Zack Evans....LOL.

Imagine Sam Carter, Derrick Kindred or Kyle Hicks doing that after a bad loss.

Then I guess I don't understand why you have a problem with him if you admit that his teammates probably don't.

Good grief - all you ol' timer Frogs throw "hate" around so much I almost feel sorry for you. It's not hate. It is simply business protocol.
Bottom line is - he quit. That's it. So....he can't just come and go as he pleases (imo). It is a terrible idea not to have a super clean break. No matter how long he has been here and no matter how everyone personally feels about him. At some point you HAVE to deny access and that should have happened on Sunday.

Is he a legend? Yes.

Do I like Gary? Of course! He lives two blocks from me and I see him all the time. Saw him last night getting into his car with Kelsey while on a walk from my house and yelled "HEY!" to him. He waved back and smiled. They were going out.

Do I think TCU made the right decision? 1000% yes...it was beyond time.

Do I think him "hanging around" is a good idea? Hell no. It is a terrible idea.

TCU and Gary need to be in cahoots again for sure...but in about 2-3 years maybe. Everything needs to calm down and get back to the business at hand....playing football and running an athletic department. Not a circus.

I don’t think football game plans work that way. If the guys left over, some who have been working for GP for more than a decade, can’t prepare a game plan at this point in their career, then that speaks volumes as the the quality of staff he assembled.
well that IS a going concern....

I have spoken with Coach P in the past about what he would like to do after football. This is exactly what he told me he would like to do. I just don’t know if it was this soon. I hope it works out.
TCU has enough room for both the old and the new at the same time…
