Frog Volleyball 2021

I don't follow volleyball closely either, but I did enjoy watching a few years ago when we seemingly had great young talent - I remember McCall and Dilfer in particular.
Since their transfers (others?) the program has definitely gone in the wrong direction.
Did women's volleyball have a "Hawaii-like incident" a la the men's basketball team??

Now begins conference play with the Frogs heading up to Ames to play 8-3 Iowa State next weekend. Hilton is a tough place to play and any win in that two match series would be both welcome and unexpected. Will be only the third and fourth matches TCU has played away from home.

Then the Frogs have a weekend off before taking on OU in a two match series at Scholl. OU was preseason picked 9th in the Big 12 with TCU picked 8th (Okie Lite does not play VB). But OU just beat SMU in Dallas this week 3-1 while the Frogs lost to Dallas 3-2 at home yesterday. Thinking most likely scenario is a split but on paper that should be a sweep weekend for the Frogs.

I agree with you Pharm, JK makes some head shaking rotation decisions. Adams and Cole should always be on the court especially in the front row. At one point, HA was trying to give JK some input but she was too busy smacking gum to notice. I’m not sure this situation can be fixed, or will be.

I have no idea how proficient Cole is at playing back row but she is always in on front row rotation. If she would get more involved in the offensive game as opposed to almost being a defensive specialist at MH, it would be awesome. Here's what I do know....we have a front row rotation of Nicholls, Myers, and Nalls at one point. Myers can be reliable but that's not a rotation that you can have much confidence in and almost none when Nicholls ends up taking the first touch...which is exactly what SMU was trying to do and doing quite well in crucial points. And I have no idea why we're playing Nalls all six when we seem to have more confidence in Raiola. When Nalls rotates to the back row for serve and Adams comes in there's far too many service errors that wastes a rotation and then Nalls is being asked to take the first touch and that is iffy in terms of getting the ball to Nicholls in the slot. I do think this young libero is going to be good but I can't understand why Nalls and Denison are stepping in fornt so often. Let her play the ball. There's just so much I don't understand from what I'm seeing but I am glad I went because its so much more understandable when you see the full court.

As for Adams...no idea why she was taken out in Set 3. The only thing I can think of is that maybe JK was upset with her attack errors. If so, that's bad because many of those "errors" happened after suboptimal first balls that led to bump sets or high sets or other scrambles completely outside of our system. AND, even if you are upset with the attack errors you need her on the court to hold a blocker down. I don't get it.

Agree! They were seldom in system due mostly to poor passing. Usually that’s due to your opponent putting pressure on the ball, not sure that was the case with SMU.

SMU put some pressure on the Frogs because they spread their attack around well and befuddled our middles who were late to very late on outside and right side blocking. I saw a tweet that the Frogs put out that I couldn’t believe they did because it showed this perfectly. See if I can find it.

Here it is….The NW quadrant. I mean you’ve got to get very lucky or have an oblivious attack for this gap to work. And it happened a lot…

As open as that block is, I like how far above the net Smiley and Cole are. The rest can be learned.

There’s zero doubt as to the athleticism on the court. The learning can come but we aren’t talking about true freshmen with one notable exception (or whatever you call them now). The standard rotation is:

JR Smiley
RS-SO Cole
JR Nalls (or SO Raiola)
JR Myers
JR Nichols S
FR Bramshreiber L
JR Adams
JR Swafford DS
GR Denison DS

This isn’t a young squad and with the exception of libero there isn’t much rotation change to integrate from prior seasons. 16 more matches this year. And this season is already 40% over. If there’s gonna be learning it needs to happen real fast. Still…front row ain’t generally the most pressing concern.

Lose 3-0 in Ames. 21-18-23. Moral victory of sorts to get to 20+ in two sets. Worst news is that Adams hit almost .300 and Myers over .430 and the Frogs still got blitzed. Nalls had one more attempt than Adams (criminal IMO) and hit .000. There’s a clue somewhere in there.

Clones hit .375 for the match and I’m guessing they about doubled up the Frogs in blocks. Maybe the Frogs can sneak up on them tomorrow.

KU beats Tech but went 5 sets. Marginally surprised by that as I thought Tech would be lucky to take just one set. Eers beat Sooners 3-1. Tech, TCU and OU all lose. That’s about right. Scary part for the Frogs is that nobody lost to UT or Baylor yet….clearly the two best teams in the conference.

With as popular as tcu is with college aged women I’m shocked our VB and WBB teams aren’t powerhouses like soccer and rifle right now

Whatever you do, DO NOT turn on this volleyball match… Frogs down 14-7 in the 1st after not one but two 5-0 runs. We’ve taken the libero Jersey away from our freshman and given it to the grad player. Just when you think we can’t do anything more stupid we go and challenge that thinking.
