Cal Poly is a preseason Top 25 team off to slow start....they got their best player back tonite vs Bakersfield....this will be a dog fight...

Maybe. Pitching wise they have been bad, defense wise really bad, and hitting average.

Midweek Updates / Scores from Around the Top 25 and Big 12:

- Texas State (2-5) upset Houston (6-2) in San Marcos 7-6

Not many upsets, but a few tight games should ease the worries of some over TCU's tight W over TSU:
- Florida 10 --- FAU 8
- UCLA 1 --- LBSU 0
- Ole Miss 2 --- Ark St 1
- UT 5 --- UTPA 4
- Tech 4 --- Savannah St 3
- Miami 5 --- Barry 3

The Big 12 won all its midweek games that were played (several CCL or PPD due to weather)

Meanwhile OSU is taking a bus to Auburn to escape the weather up here and will play Western Illinois twice and Auburn once this weekend before heading back to Stillwater.  This takes the place of a scheduled home series against Western Illinois.  I suppose they'll get credit for two neutral site games and a road game on RPI.  The Holliday connection <Josh (OSU) and Tom (Auburn's pitching coach under Sunny G)> set this up at the last minute.  My son is friends and former teammates with a few of the OSU players and they ain't looking forward to this.

I hope Alexander can find the form he did last season. Prior to this 5 game funk he had the following outings

Big 12 Championship game. Complete game 1 run 4 hit performance. 9 IP, 4 hits, 1 run, 4ks and 0 BB

Final game of regular season. At Baylor, 6 IP 4 hits, 1 run 7 Ks and 2 BB

Final home game of regular season, OU, 8 IP 5 hits, 1 run  3 Ks and 1 BB

KState: 7 IP, 4 hits, 1 Run 5ks and 0 BB

Cal State: 7 IP, 4 hits, 0 Runs, 5ks and 0 BB

Texas 5 IP, 6 hits, 1 run, 1k and 0 BB

Most recent 6 games before the funk starting with the top. He went 5-0 during that run (we won all 6)

During that stretch he averaged 7 innings a start, with an ERA of 1.07 and a ludicrous WHIP of 0.7143 . Given the importance of those games and the difficulty of the opponents, it's amazing how good of a run that was.

Yeah he was ridiculously good and has been pretty poor since. Up and down.

Unfortunately for him, and fortunately for us, Traver is pitching really well. Another poor start and I wouldn't be surprised to see Traver switch to Saturdays.

This is why I think his leash is rather long before he loses a weekend spot in the rotation.

Traver's last two outings are compelling reasons to experiment sooner.  The longer Traver stays on this kind of run and the longer Tyler continues to struggle the louder the calls will get for a change.  I can see it going either way, but I'm really pulling for Tyler.  He showed me an awful lot last year.

If they make the rotation swap I think Young would probably go to Saturdays and Traver to Sundays if for no other reason than to go righty, lefty, righty on the weekend.

Good thing is it's not like he goes away, weekday starters pitch most every week. Could help him get back into a groove

Why pull Evans out of the pen? Bench Young?

Maybe that's what alexander needs. We'll see how the cal poly series goes.
Putting him in the pen for a few weeks worked last season.  It could be the answer this season.  I'm not ready to do that yet, however.  Not unless Saarloos is seeing something mechanical that's going to require a few weeks' work.  It looks more to me like he's just missing spots, though.

Weekend Preview: February 27- March 1
I'm only previewing records we're not deep enough into the season for me to know much about personnel, and Im not going to read up on all these teams/personnel in February. Maybe in late April. Anyway, here you go:

#1 TCU (7-1) hosts Cal Poly (2-6)

Frogs host preseason-top 25 Cal Poly for a 3-game series in Fort Worth. Cal Poly has been swept by #25 (6-2) Baylor in Waco (6-8, 6-8, 0-6) and got swept at home in San Luis Obispo by (7-1) Grand Canyon (4-10, 2-4, 3-9). Cal Poly has won its two mid-week games on the road at (3-5) Fresno State (7-6) and at home over (3-5) Cal State Bakersfield in an offensive explosion (13-2). Cal Poly's best hitter was out until this week, but the Frogs are heavy favorites to win the series. Weather could be an issue, particularly Friday, so look for the possibility of a Saturday doubleheader.

#2 UVA (7-0) hosts the Virginia Tournament

UVA is undefeated, but they've played a weak schedule--only one opponent has a winning record. They swept (2-4) ECU on the road (3-1, 9-2, 4-2), and swept 4 games in Charleston, SC vs. (0-3) Marist (9-1, 7-2, 5-4) and (4-3) La Salle (8-3). This weekend they'll play 2 vs. Seton Hall and 2 vs. Hartford. They are heavy favorites against both teams. Expect UVA to stay firmly in the top 5 without facing a real test until hosting Florida State in 3 weeks.

#3 LSU (6-1) hosts Princeton (0-0)

The LSU Tigers have swept Kansas and BC at home and, surprisingly, dropped a game to Nichols State at home last week (3-6). To Nichols State's credit, they won a series against a decent Stony Brook team, too. The SEC Tigers should easily handle the Ivy Tigers this weekend in Baton Rouge. LSU will face a tough test next weekend in the Houston College Classic against #6 UH (who won the Baton Rouge Regional last year), #25 Baylor and Nebraska.

#4 Vanderbilt (6-2) hosts Illinois State (4-2)

The defending champs have scored 32 runs in their last 3 games (on the heels of a 1-8 L to Indiana State). Look for the 'Dores to stay on track this weekend. TCU plays Vandy in LA next weekend.

#5 Florida (7-1) hosts Stony Brook (2-4)

This could be an interesting series, though Florida is off to a great start this year (ranked as high as #2) having won 2 of 3 vs. Miami last weekend. Expect UF to win the series, but Stony Brook is probably better than its 2-4 record and could make the weekend interesting.

#6 Houston (6-2) hosts Columbia (0-0)

The Cougs are looking to end a 2-game losing streak after starting off 6-0. They swept Minnesota, beat Texas Southern, and won 2 of 3 vs. Alabama---all at home. They lost the final game to Bama and lost on the road last night to Texas State. Rain could mess with this series, so we'll see if they actually get 4 games in.

#7 Texas Tech (9-1) hosts Sacramento State (6-3)

This is actually a 5-game series that started Wednesday (Tech W). Thursday has already been PPD, and the weekend weather could be an issue. Tech swept 4 vs. NIU at home and 4 vs. San Francisco at home. The sole loss came at home to #30 Nevada, a good 7-1 team whose sole loss came at Stanford a couple days ago. We'll see how many games get played. The cold weather could slow down the Tech ballpark which is notorious for high-scoring games. TCU will play 3 in Lubbock this year.

#8 UCLA (7-1) hosts Michigan State (3-3)

UCLA is good. They took 2 of 3 vs. #21 UNC in Orlando last weekend, and have won all their other games, including a win at Cal State Northridge and vs. Long Beach State. Sparty has played in a couple tournaments and got a good win over New Mexico and lost 3-4 to a good Oregon State team and 1-3 to UTA and HBU. UCLA is a heavy favorite at home in LA. TCU will face UCLA in LA next weekend.

#9 Arizona State (4-3) hosts the Phoenix Muni Classic

Our friends in Phoenix will play 4 this weekend 2 vs. Cal State Bakersfield (3-5) and 1 vs. Purdue (4-4) and 1 vs. Gonzaga (4-5). Ill be surprised if ASU doesnt win 3 of these. TCU won its series at ASU 2-1.

#10 Oklahoma State (5-3) vs. Western Illinois (0-3) (Auburn, AL)

The Pokes are headed to Auburn, AL to escape the bad weather and play Western Illinois (0-3). This won't do much for their RPI, but should help the win column. The Pokes have won 4 in a row and Western Illinois got swept by Middle Tennessee (14-16, 4-5, 2-19). TCU will host OSU for 3.

#11 Texas (8-2) hosts San Diego (2-6)

San Diego was expected to be better than they have been. They lost 3 of 4 at home to Morehead State, lost 2 of 3 at home to DBU, and lost at SDSU. As long as Texas isn't looking ahead to their 4-game road trip to Stanford, they should win the series, but don't be surprised to see San Diego make it interesting. TCU will host UT for 3.

#12 Rice (6-3) hosts Stanford (4-4)

TCU hosts Rice on Tuesday, but first the Owls host Stanford for 4 (assuming the weather cooperates). Rice split a series with Texas 2-2 (in Houston), and won a series at 8-2 Arizona. Thiy've been hitting the ball well thus far. Stanford is a good 4-4 team having lost 2 games to Indiana, 1 at Fullerton, and 1 to Cal. Nevada's sole loss is to Stanford.

#19 A&M (9-0) hosts Dartmouth (0-0)

Preface: A&M has an awful schedule. They swept (1-5) Holy Cross, (0-6) Penn State, (2-7) SFA, (4-6) Incarnate Word, and (5-3) Houston Baptist. Theyre averaging 9.7 runs per game and haven't left College Station (the world is really a better place as a result). They should handle Dartmouth easily and very well may be 12-0 come Sunday night. Next week well see what they're really made of as they face DBU, Nebraska, UH, and Baylor.

#25 Baylor (6-2) travels to Cal State Fullerton (2-5)

The Bears are leaving Waco for the first time to play a 3-game series at CS Fullerton. This weekend is huge for CSF---who has really disappointed early. The Bears swept Cal Poly and won 2 vs Kent State and 1 vs. Northwestern State. The Bear' "non-wins" have come at home to Kent State (1 of 3) and at home to Dallas Baptist. TCU will host BU for 3.

Oklahoma (6-4) hosts BYU (1-7)

OU has played in tournaments that have produced 1 win and 2 losses to (7-1) Notre Dame and wins over Oregon State and Washington. BYU has struggled, but its early. They got swept (4) by UC Santa Barbara and lost 3 of 4 to Nebraska. The Cougars and Sooners will play 4. TCU will host OU for one midweek game and travel to OU for a weekend series.

WVU (3-3) travels to Chanticleer Classic (Myrtle Beach, SC)

Hopefully Coach Mazey is spending less time worrying about the timing of opening day and more time figuring out how not to lose series to schools like Georgia Southern. WVU won an impressive series at Mazey's alma mater---Clemson--- then lost a series at Georgia Southern. Life on the road all the time is hard, though, for teams like WVU in February and March. The 'Eers face Coastal Carolina (5-2), Kent State (2-4), Ball State (4-2) and Illinois (6-0) this weekend in SC. TCU will host WVU for 3 in Mazey's second return to Fort Worth.

Kansas (2-5) travels to Snowbird Classic (Port Charlotte, FL)

KU had a tough opening weekend getting handily swept at LSU. They split their 4 games in the Pac-12 / Big 12 Challenge last weekend in AZ. This weekend they face Chicago State (1-6), North Dakota State (0-5), Northeastern (2-4), and Boston College (2-5) in very winnable games that could get them back above or close to .500. TCU hosts KU this year.

K-State (4-4) hosts Eastern Illinois (0-3)

Georgia blew out EIU in 3 by a combined score of 39-6 last weekend. K-State should win this series. The Wildcats have 4 wins---Iowa, Pitt, Utah and Wazzu. And they have 4 losses---George Mason, SLU, Oregon St, and Washington. They should be fine this weekend, but well see what they've got vs. Santa Clara next weekend. TCU travels to KSU this year.

Other TCU Non-Con Opponents:

- USC (9-0) has wins over teams with a combined 8-24 record, but theyre winning those games by an average of 5 ½ runs. The Trojans host Fordham (1-5) this weekend. TCU plays at USC next Friday night.

- Loyola Marymount (6-2) hosts Nebraska for 3 this weekend. TCU will play at LMU in a midweek game after the Dodgertown Classic Tuesday after next (TCU spring break).

- UTPA (5-3) lost 4-5 at Texas yesterday, but their record is misleading as it includes a 3-game sweep of a very bad ACU team. TCU hosts UTPA for 2 in a midweek series next month.

- Wichita St (3-4) will play 3 at Long Beach State (5-3) this weekend. The Shockers were ranked preseason.

- UTA (3-4) will play a 4-game series at A&M-CC (5-2). Records are hard to tell much from, but give me UTA in this series. TCU will play UTA 2 more times, both in Arlington midweek.

- DBU (6-1) will probably beat up on Mass-Lowell (2-2). TCU hosts DBU for one and travels to Dallas for one, both on Tuesdays. DBU looks to be their normal above-average/regional type team early.

- Santa Clara (4-3) has a banner win over Vandy in a series the Commodores won 2-1. Santa Clara swept Cinci and lost one at UC Davis. They host EMU (3-6) for 4 this weekend. TCU hosts SCU for 3 in April

- Incarnate Word (4-6) is on our schedule? We play them in 1 Tuesday game. They'll travel to 0-8 NMSU this weekend. FWIW, they're on about every Texas teams Tuesday schedule.

- ACU (0-6) is another future BU football opponent who also appears on our baseball schedule. They have a good chance to get their first non-non-win of the year hosting Northern Colorado (1-3) this weekend.
