I’d like to see how many of those coaches that did had some consistent success versus ours who had the best season he’s ever had. Dykes’ overall record indicates only average/mediocrity for its history. Should have waited to give that extension regardless of the NCG season. And I’d say that for any coach in the first year at a school.
That's fair. He's paid too much. Who isn't? I think the contract is brought up by people who don't like Donati and want to [ hundin] about him. We aren't going to fire the guy less than two years removed from the NCG unless the thing comes completely off the rails, and if it totally comes off the rails we'll be able to move on from him, regardless of the contract.
And I think he's had more success than he's given credit for. He took over a 4-8 program at La Tech and went 5-7, 8-5, and 9-3 in his three years there. HIs Cal stint was blah, but for the millionth time, who wins at Cal? Their current coach, who has been there 8 years, has gone 40-47. At SMU Dykes was the most successful coach they had had since the death penalty, and it really wasn't all that close. All in all, it's really not a bad resume at all, that's why he's been able to coach for 15 years at the D1 level, without taking a big step down in jobs like some guys have to.
