TCU vs OSU Game Thread

Should put your hand over your heart, thumb pointing up, slight separation between thumb and forefinger, should be right hand over heart if you are right handed, left hand if you are left handed, hand should be in upper part of chest, not lower, chin should be slightly uplifted, mouth closed, eyes straight ahead, feet slightly parted on floor, head tilted backward just a bit. Anything else is disrespectful to our flag and nation.

Haha Haha. Good one, Judge Smails.

You’ve never heard of or noticed this? Really???

I’ve attended sporting events my entire life and it’s always been common place as nearly everyone does it.

And yes it is a “thing.” Is it mandatory? Obviously not. People have the freedom to do what they want.

BUT, it is technically part of the “Flag Code.”

(a)Designation.—
The composition consisting of the words and music known as the Star-Spangled Banner is the national anthem.
(b)Conduct During Playing.—During a rendition of the national anthem—
(1)when the flag is displayed—
(A)
individuals in uniform should give the military salute at the first note of the anthem and maintain that position until the last note;
(B)
members of the Armed Forces and veterans who are present but not in uniform may render the military salute in the manner provided for individuals in uniform; and
(C)
all other persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, and men not in uniform, if applicable, should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart; and
(2)
when the flag is not displayed, all present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed.
Hmmmm and my dad was retired Air Force..... I have never paid attention or I guess I’m usually wearing a cap.

I went to most of the Air Force home games this year and I can tell you many there kept their hats and beanies on when they saluted. It was cold and windy. They are just as patriotic as someone who follows the code to the letter. Many talked to their friends and chuckled throughout. They are no less patriotic. We’ve become a society of snowflakes across every political spectrum.

You do see the difference in the two programs, though, right? The football program has about 20 years of mostly sustained success including several top 10 finishes. The basketball program is the exact opposite of that.

I'm not in favor of anyone blasting any of these kids in any sport, but there's also a lot of reasons why people quickly get down about the basketball team. There's pretty much zero recent success in that sport for any of us to hang our hat on. We're all hoping for the best but it's been nothing but hope for most of this century.

The difference I see is I’m a TCU sports fan not a football fan. I’m no more a TCU football fan than I am a basketball or baseball fan. My fandom isn’t subject to a particular program’s won loss record ever. You might not have been around in the 70’s when the football team was incredibly poor but I still cheered for them each and every game.

As for the basketball team they keep getting better even though many on here still think they aren’t good. I’ll give you a HSO and it’s this team is a top 60 and closing in on top 50 in the country. I can’t wait to read the posts telling me I’m out of my mind.

Jeez, I didn’t realize I wasn’t being specific enough. What angle am I supposed to tilt my head backward? I’m ambidextrous. Do I put both hands over my hearts? If us see someone with their left hand over their heart should I inquire as to their dominant hand or assume they are doing it wrong?

This has been very educational. Did you know Francis Bellamy was a Socialist?
You don't have a heart so you are exempt.

If you are in the military and are saluting during the anthem, it is appropriate to keep your hat on. Only civilians should remove their hat.

You should try constant yelling.
Peace is more of a Tarkanian protege. Makes it hard to yell effectively.

Military personnel don’t remove their hats, they salute

Gotcha. I’m on the side with the mostly retired military and civilians. I’m not sure what the rules are for them. I know they all appear to salute. I do see some remove their beanies and some don’t. The announcer usually reminds people what they are supposed to do. The last game almost everyone kept their beanies on as the winds were gusting to 50 mph and the temps were in the 20’s. Fun times.

If you didn’t grasp Samuel’s value in the win yesterday - I suggest you either actually watch the game instead of just reading the stat line or take interest in another sport besides basketball due to a lack of comprehension

Did you ever play competitive basketball? If the tallest person on your team cannot score or cannot catch the ball without traveling that is a problem. I think TCU needs to go back to fundamentals.

A change to the rules occurred about 8 years ago. Retired military are now allowed (and encouraged) to keep their caps or hats on and render a military salute.

He has scored... And without traveling.... A whole LOT this year. OSU ran a defense that specifically attepmted to take him out of a game. He said "fine, I'll contribute on the defensive end" and meanwhile our other offensive players beat the weirdo defense.

If they triple team your best receiver in FB, who gets the ball? Not him, but somebody open. Basic concepts bro.

I know they changed the rules, but it just seems weird to salute when in civilian clothes.
I do it, and quite proudly.
Here is the actual text from the law:

SEC. 595. MILITARY SALUTE FOR THE FLAG DURING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM BY MEMBERS OF THE ARMED FORCES NOT IN UNIFORM AND BY VETERANS.

Section 301(b)(1) of title 36, United States Code, is amended by striking subparagraphs (A) through (C) and inserting the following new subparagraphs: ``(A) individuals in uniform should give the military salute at the first note of the anthem and maintain that position until the last note; ``(B) members of the Armed Forces and veterans who are present but not in uniform may render the military salute in the manner provided for individuals in uniform; and ``(C) all other persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, and men not in uniform, if applicable, should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart."

Note: Part (C) applies to those not in the military and non-veterans. The phrase "men not in uniform" refers to civil service uniforms like police, fire fighters, and letter carriers - non-veteran civil servants who might normally render a salute while in uniform.

Another lesser known custom is that you should face the flag which is in the position of honor, if there is more than one flag on display. So, you should face the huge flag at the north end of the stadium, unless there is a color guard on the field, displaying the colors.

Yet we continued to pass him the ball and commit turnovers. The time he got a pass near the FT line was just laughable.

Sadly, no. Lost the opener 8-6. I spent all week drawing up the perfect game plan to neutralize the size advantage the Polar Bears had over us, but if the kids don’t execute what’s a coach supposed to do? I wanted to push the pace. They were bigger but we were faster. Instead, the kids all bunched up in one place in one corner of the court and either double dribbled or traveled. It was a disaster.

I totally understand the difficult job college and pro coaches have now.
I got a pretty good laugh, as it brought back memories. Until they get the hang of it, coaching kids that age is kind of like herding cats...just doesn't work right.

Well, as opposed to the football example, someone being focused on by the D in basketball won't get ZERO touches. He will touch the ball from time to time and if he gets swarmed, he may turn it over. He's not the only one on our team who has turned it over when rushed by heavy defense from 2+ angles.

But we stayed away from that in the second half from what I saw. We put Bane in an offensive slot that I've never seen him in - some sort of high elbow post. Gotta think that was in direct response to KS being focused on. And it opened up several easy step backs for Desmond.

I mean... if KS doesn't score another point the rest of the year, but the adjustments the defenses make to enable that allows us to win most of those games, I'll be perfectly fine with it.

But what I actually EXPECT to happen is what I've seen in all games except the OSU one - KS gets double doubles, continues to have better hands than last year, and overall is a very stout center option. As someone else mentioned, if you are paying attention you have seen he is a very good center who hasn't even reached his ceiling yet.
