Expansion - BY making moves?

Agreed. I'm curious how the new Venu streaming service will do -- it's a collaboration of ESPN, Fox and TNT/TBS for $42.99/month. With that and an HD antenna I can get pretty much all of the sports I need (although I'd miss the highly anticipated Week 0 game between SMU and Nevada on CBSSN). I'm thinking about tossing my cable box and getting it.

Who is added to the Big 12 is pretty much irrelevant at this point. I don't think UCONN joining or not joining the league makes a bit of difference either way, whether it be as a full member or basketball only.

As far as cable dying, not so fast. More and more people are discovering that the ala cart way of doing things is more of a pain and not much, if any, cheaper than cable. I've been looking for the article and can't find it, but people are getting sick of the quality and issues dealing with streaming, of having numerous platforms they have to navigate and miss the simplicity of just turning the tv on and not having to fool with anything else. The gist of the article was that cable isn't as dead as people think.

If cable providers were smart, they'd market their services accordingly.
cable seems to be evolving pretty well. the need for multiple streaming accounts is getting thin on the nerves of consumers. Trying hard not to view this from my own standpoint. I have what I want on my cable package in town and I only really stream hunting shows via one provider. May stream some football this year. heck, i'd look at dish again since I can get that equipment that travels, but if you have wifi to your truck, kinda don't even need that these days.

I know I was slammed before for posting news from Drake Toll, but the UCONN insider did say that the addition looked like it would also include football, which is different than basketball only. I think there is a big difference.

What is the difference? It's not going to impact any school other than UCONN materially at all, and it's not like the B12 is going to get a big boost or a big black eye for adding UCONN as a full member.

The Big 12's relevancy is what it is at this point, no addition or subtraction of the schools being talked about is going to move that needle at all.

In ‘22 & ‘23 the UCONN athletics dept ran a total budget deficit of nearly $100m, and that was after the school kicked in subsidies.
The AD has forecasted ‘24 deficits to be > $50m and ‘25 to be $70m.
Their spending is completely out of control.
Yormark may want UCONN, but I’m not that sure the schools would vote to support with all that red ink. It would require 11 of 16 schools to approve.
.….and as Wex said, it doesn‘t matter that much. Unfortunately, the B12 is a 2nd string Power conference and that is not going to change for the better.

Perhaps you’re right but I suspect this could be tied to a bigger plan to peel off the bb tv stuff and negotiate it as a separate package. I don’t necessarily get the overwhelming tv value for bb but the nba is getting insane money. I know college v pro is not an apt comparison but I would be a bb only package would draw a good contract with the right combination of product.

Tbh, I don't think the race is to be the best... It's to survive as close to the sun as we can... And that may be the game that BY is trying to play. We'll see. He's definitely mixing it up. Conventional warfare here won't work for the Big 12.
I like your Icarus reference.
The BIG/SEC is like this white hot fire sucking all the oxygen/$$$ out of the room.
I honestly don’t see how Group teams will even survive, as the money is already flowing away from them in order to support the new world order of CFB.
The B12 will likely survive, as the 16 schools + ?additions may have too many fans to completely exclude, but we’ll lose ground with each passing year.

As far as the media and coverage is concerned, nobody outside the SEC/BIG is going to matter. And let’s be honest, those two leagues ARE going to be so much better than the others. If Utah were in the SEC or B12, they’d probably be the 4th or 5th best team, at best, and probably more like 6th or 7th.

The best days of Frog football are over, the conference realignment and rules changes guarantee that. I think we’ll maybe have a year or two until that becomes painfully obvious. It’ll be interesting to see how long people hang on.
