David Gettis WR 6-3 210 Baylor

MSNBC analysis on this Baylor draft pick....

David Gettis WR 6-3 210 Baylor
Analysis:
(From N.Y. Jets) Another underachiever, Gettis arrived at Baylor as a monster recruit and U.S. Army Bowl participant, but never earned better than honorable mention All-Big 12 and scored just four career receiving touchdowns as a three-year starter. Essentially a track athlete playing football (he did win three state titles in the 400M in high school), Gettis is practice squad material.

He's probably the only underachiever in the draft. Ever.

Gettis came to Baylor very raw as a football player. He was a 400 meter track guy who had run under 46 seconds in HS. He signed with Baylor as a Rivals 4 star recruit based primarily on his size and speed, but he didn't qualify and had to sit out a year. Rivals then reclassified him and downgraded him to a 3 star, when he finally qualified the next year.

Coming in, his hands were very suspect and he did not run precise routes. His first two years, he had meager production at WR. He also returned kicks. When Briles took over, Gettis had another disappointing season as a junior. He could run hook patterns and catch the ball when he was stopped, but when he was running deeper patterns, he had a lot of difficulty making catches on the run.

In the offseason Briles challenged him to step it up for his senior year. This past season, he caught everything that was thrown his way. He had 52 catches for 675 yards and 2 TDs, which are not great numbers, but not bad considering that Baylor struggled badly at QB after Griffin went down during the 3rd game of the season.

Gettis went to the combine and put up high 4.4s and low 4.5 numbers in the 40. He also worked out again on Baylor's pro day and went sub 4.4 both times which helped his stock. It is true that when you look at his whole collegiate career, he underachieved. But if you look at his senior year, he improved dramatically and with his size and speed, he's got a decent chance to make the roster.

I wonder about the morbid fascination with Baylor-related topics that frequently evidences itself in this forum. Seems a lot like posting a list of dog-poop cams.
