The plan was for Gary to agree to stay on through the rest of the season while the search fully got underway for his successor. It was not a meeting to fire him on the spot.

The game did not pass him by. Sark told a group of donors that it’s the just a matter of time before Gary can’t turn down offers anymore. Said Gary had a major impact on his D staff and work. Basically, it’s his call.
So many of our folks want to lie to themselves and claim “oh, he would never coach elsewhere”. (Which is why him working at Texas upset them.)
kinda like the wife who gets bored and leaves a marriage. Lies to herself that “he’ll be torn up forever”. Next thing she knows she has put on 40 pounds from wine nights, has 2 cats, and he is engaged to an ass goddess who looks like she stepped out of a fitness video.

He studied the fine workings of the portal and actually advised on it at Texas.

Gawd , I wish we lived in that college football world AND general world again. No/limited transfers, no nil. Everything was cheaper and etc. no remote workers moving in from every corner of the USA. Gary growing them up….

I absolutely love Gary, but he is not the solution. Hid tactics were getting stale and it was killing his locker room. The ONLY reason Sonny did well in his first season is that he was gifted with amazing talent that had a pressure cooker of stress released. Sonny did nothing. Gary did everything, but he is not the answer. We need to go after a talented recruiter, evaluator and developer. I would be ok with Gary being on staff, but not the head coach. I dont think he would anyway.

Because he's completely ill-suited for the job?
The main criticism of the guy while he was here is that he didn't put a good staff around him and he wouldn't fire assistant coaches that needed to be fired, and now you think bringing him back as an AD for god's sake, is something that should be considered?
Some people need to get over their hero worship of GP. He was an excellent coach for a good majority of the time he was here, towards the latter part of his career he started losing his touch, and at the very end he was awful and completely lost the team. We had to move on. The end.

Not a general consensus.
He has spend the past few years advising on big programs, learning from them and gaining a crazy amount of additional knowledge on staff development and the portal.
