While ranked choice voting wouldn’t work within an electoral college based system, Ross Perot is a good example of why Ranked Choice Voting would be a superior voting method.
Everyone who voted Perot could have put Bush as their #2 choice. When the votes were tallied and Perot came in last place, he would be eliminated and his votes would be reassigned to his voters’ #2 choice Bush.
Ranked choice voting allows voters to vote for the candidate they actually prefer without having to worry about their preferred candidate playing spoiler.
