Were we the only Big12 team to play a road game opener? Seems like everyone else played at home (I think). Traveling to the west coast and playing late at night should be factored into the equation when analyzing overall performance. TCU isn't really used to that kind of later start vs. teams from the PAC.
Power 5 teams with a non-con Power-5 road win:
  • Miami
  • North Carolina
  • Notre Dame
  • Penn State
  • TCU
Not many are willing to try. Clemson at least took the game in Athens. Va Tech couldn't get it done at Vandy. Fla. State couldn't beat Ga. Tech on a neutral field. UNC survived a last-second missed FG at Minnesota.

Furthermore, never know early in the season how good teams are. Preseason rankings can be off. But even if they are an ACC bottom feeder, we statistically dominated them on the road and game prob should have been a 2-3 TD win based on underlying efficiency numbers. That’s a solid start to the year.

Defense - A few good spots, but still need a lot of improvement. I love our corners. Still not satisfied with the pass rush. The times we did get pressure with our front 4, it was mostly due to great coverage. Can't rely on blitz to get pressure every time. Giving up so many 3rd down conversions on runs is very concerning. Stop the dumb penalties when we're about to get off the field.

Offense - Too many drops and turnovers by our older guys. Run-blocking still seems to be an issue. Bech should be a starter. I like our TEs and hope we use them more.

We should have washed this team and I'm disappointed we didn't. Good news is it was game 1.

I prefer to think of it as 2 games.
The first one was a complete “Murphy’s Law” anomaly that should be buried and forgotten.
The second one was a pretty good beating that is much closer to TCU’s capabilities.

However, we still need to figure out how to run the ball. Forcing Hoover into a gunslinger role will probably work better than it did last year, but it won’t get us to 8/9 wins.

ACC Officiating - I will give them a B- only because there are always first-game inconsistencies. They just didn’t seem to be working that well together and should get better. Probably let a lot of things go that B12 would have called, meaning the DB’s won’t be able to cover like the did last night.

Team discipline - Needs work. Caused too many stupid penalties. That is an easy fix.

Above are strictly my opinions, which aren’t worth a whole lot.
I like it when the refs let the DB's & WR's play, as long as they're consistent on both sides. Looks like they were Friday night.

Ticky tacky whistles drive me crazy.

I noticed that in the Friday HS game that I went to. We forget that it's the zebra's first game too. May also be working with different people than they are used to.

They were 5 of 6 in Red Zone (4TDs) and the only miss was an idiotic fumble.

I hope this is the story of our season. I'm not rooting against him because to do so would be to root against TCU football. But I am a skeptic. We may have scored in the red zone but it felt like we worked harder than we had to and wouldn't have succeeded against better teams. We'll see.

There were some questionable calls after plays were over, but I loved how those officials called the game in the backfield on passing plays. They were fair both ways and let defensive backs get physical without getting dirty. It was excellent.

It’s the scheme. Too many unblocked players on run plays. Instead of drawing up run plays that put a body on a body, Tapefingers relies on subterfuge, which isn’t how a run game becomes consistent. Also, Cook needs to run north and south, see the tiniest sliver of light and hit that hole. He started doing that in the 2nd half. Holes aren’t always big, you just need to get past that 1st layer.

I’m not sure what game you were watching. We literally allowed one 3rd down conversion via the run the entire game. Stanford was 5-15 on 3rd down, three of those by penalty on the first drive.
