Houston stadium and atmosphere sucked

It reminded me of the Independence Bowl/Farrington Field from the outside, but they put a thin, school-colored facade around it to make it look better.
Now wait just a second there, buddy, you take Farrington Field’s name out of your mouth. While it could certainly use some TLC, that is a WPA-era treasure, art deco, moderne style, with bas relief sculptures featuring Davey O’Brien, and it is a gem. You want to throw some shade on a Fort Worth stadium, you can save your bon mots for Clark Field.

Fair enough. Let’s put a pin in this convo and talk about it next year on Houston’s visit to AGC and let’s see how much we draw for this in-state, conference opponent.
Will that be our first game in a big boy conference after decades of complaining we got left behind? Feel like we had that moment already and had a sell out against a mediocre opponent we had zero history with…

UH proved this weekend why they have never gotten an invite before - they have a small fanbase because despite all attempts to fix it - their students largely still have a commuter school mentality and no one cares about the hometown team outside of alumni

I bet even SMU manages to pack it for their first ACC home game

Will the visiting team be one with lots of sports fan alums/fans in the area? Or will SMU need its own fans to fill the seats? If the latter, they'll be doing a good job to get 25k through the gates, and they may draw closer to 15k.

Just guessing.

Believe me, I am in no way trying to defend Cougar High. I just know that my season tickets in AGC are up at the tippy-top and we are almost always sitting alone or surrounded by the opponent’s fans. I’m just saying, we have all kinds of viable smack talk against Houston. Attendance, uh, is not where I would start.

I agree that access to the upper deck was poorly thought out.

Concessions were on the ground level, so it was a loooong walk.

That stadium was built ten years ago, when UH didn’t have Big XII money.

They’ll make some upgrades, and things will improve with time and revenue.

The neighborhood sucks, but it always has and always will. Stay on campus.

UH fans were very friendly, and they were highly complimentary of TCU.

Go Frogs!

Erector set stadium. I thought it was new. Looked old. Easy in and out so a plus there.

Stadium half full. I thought they were excited about the first Big 12 game. I guess Rice took some starch out of that. (see what I did there?)

Funny they showed a UH fan on the video board who held up his phone to the camera that read FIRE DANA.

Meh. Good win for the Frogs. Will take it.

I actually like the feel of the stadium, and a had great time overall.

We sat behind 2 UofH fans in their 80s; they were hilarious, complimentary of us, but very passionate about their coogs. So we definitely enjoyed the game.

My biggest complaint: They ran out of Coke and Shipley's Donuts!

I think long term they're going to be fun to have in the Big 12.

Yeah, I don't get that either. Relative to how good our football team has been, our attendance has kind of sucked over the years, with a few rare exceptions.

There are almost ALWAYS all kinds of empty seats around me, no matter where I sit. Unless it's one of those marquee games that come around very couple years it seems.

I know this is a well trodden complaint, but in my season ticket section, there are maybe 30% of the seats with people I recognize from other games. It’s SeatGeek City up there. Usually surrounded by opposing fans, or my seats are an island in a sea of aluminum.

We are obviously not an attendance powerhouse, but we do pretty damn good considering the amount of alumni we have. TCU probably averages 45k fans per game with only 100k or so living alumni.

UH probably has 4x the living alumni TCU has and had maybe 30k there for their inaugural Big 12 game.

Outside of ND and maybe one or two more, I doubt you find a higher ratio of fans in stands to living alumni in the nation.

TCU fans are passionate, we are just limited by sheer numbers. It is what it is.

They had a decent selection of concessions, but they were not staffed well. Their payment system is slow, seems to fail about 1/2 the time, and I hate when you have to go through multiple screens to change the tip to something reasonable for someone who just hands you 2 bottles of water.

I thought their fans were pretty well engaged.

I also liked the $7 Patron Margaritas that they sold until 1 hour before game time (on the rocks, heavy pour).

I do think the issue with the 3rd deck needing to go all the way down for concessions on the visitors side will be addressed in a future expansion. Supposedly the can add a 4th deck of 10k seats, and it was evident they built the 3rd deck elevated enough to permit a concourse under it over the concessions below.

A reasonable tip for somebody who hands you a bottle of water is….$0

Your tip is a donation to UH athletics…
