Finishing strong and team growth

Two losses by a total of 4 pts, including blowing a 21 point loss as well as an inexplicable loss to Houston have doomed the season. Oh, what could have been.

But, the team is bowl eligible after missing the post-season games last year and has a chance to finish 8-4.

After going 5-7 last season, things are definitely better. And the play on the field is continuing to improve, on both sides of the ball.

Turnovers:

The offense had 18 turnovers, including 8 ints the first 8 games. Zero the last 2. Avg 2.16 last season, 1.8 this season
The defense forced 4 turnovers the first 7 games, 5 the last 3. 1 per game last season, 1.2 per game this season

Passing:
Last season TCU avg 312 YPG passing, this season 330
Last season TCU gave up 254 YPG passing, this season 187

Red zone offense
Last season scored 37 of 51 72.5% (30 TDs 58.8%)
This season scored 38 of 42 (90.4%) (31 TDs 73.8%)

Sacks
Allowed an avg of 1.58 per game last season, 1.1 this season
Had an avg of 2.17 per game last season, 2.0 this season

Points per game though almost identical as TCU avg 33.2 Per game this season and allowing 27.6. Last year TCU averaged 31.33 PPG and gave up 27.83 PPG.

What has been the killer this season is rush defense and offense. The Utah and Oklahoma State games were the only games TCU had more rushing yards than their opponent. Total for TCU so far this season is 1,100 yards and given up 1,724.

I’m really sort of surprised TCU is doing as well as they are. I’ve always followed the old school methodology of run the ball, stop the run, & pressure the QB to win.
TCU can’t do any of those things. What we do have is a near 4,000 yd QB and a top 30 scoring offense.
Avalos got fired last year because he couldn’t pressure the QB, but we have fewer sacks this year and we’re giving up 170+ rushing per game.
It is an absolute MUST for TCU to substantially improve the DL via next month’s portal. We need 3 big aggressive D linemen, at least 2, which won’t be easy.

12 of 25 commits for 2025 are linemen, 7 DLs

The recent JUCO offered would be huge.

Yes, to Dykes’ credit he has done more OL/DL recruiting in the last 3 years than TCU has done in a very long time. The only problem is it takes 2 or 3 years for those dividends to start paying off.
If we don’t move in the Dec. Portal to bridge that 2-3 year gap on DL for ‘25, we’ll have -0- seniors, 3 juniors, and a handful of redshirt Sophs that are only now beginning to get PT.
The juco is why I said we may be able to get by with 2 DLs instead of 3.

It must be crazy for coaches right now.
- Finish out the regular season, hopefully with 2 wins.
- Early signing period for HS 12/4 - 12/6.
- Bowl game preparation.
- Transfer portal 12/9 - 12/28. Who leaves?? Who signs??
In this 6 week period we will find out how good TCU is this year, plus how good the team might be in ‘25. No pressure, but a couple of years depends on the next 6 weeks.
- Maintain a top 25 or darn close recruiting class. 20 At present.
- Win at least 2 out of the next 3 games.
- Recruit the portal hard for DLs, WRs, a big RB, & other patches.

Yeah, it's a take what we can get situation right now. Thankfully our schedule is soft. This team is improving, but obviously a long way from where we need to be upfront. Without better players and depth on the lines it won’t get much better than it is now.

Concur. Sounds like an Andy Dalton Christmas this year. Put it off until after the Rose Bowl then celebrate.

Well, I’m happy that this team and staff continue to fight to salvage a decent season. One of our biggest complaints has always been we are either feast or famine in the B12 — we either win 10 games, or 6 or less. So this is an improvement.

Let’s be real, though. We didn’t have OU, UT, KState or Iowa State on the schedule this year (and a normally competitive OSU, either). So the stats and record are somewhat misleading. The only high quality team we played scored 66 on us.

The reality is losing OU and UT will bring/has brought everyone down a notch. There is a huge gap between the Big 10/SEC and everyone else, and it's not just perception. And I realize that UT wasn't all that good of a team in a lot of years over the past decade, but them just being in the league helped everyone else.

I think it will become pretty obvious once the playoffs start, but we'll see. The ACC and Big 12 teams at the top of the league standings haven't even been tested yet for the most part. If you do the "who have they beaten" thing, it's pretty laughable when it comes to teams like SMU, Miami, Clemson and Colorado. And Clemson lost to Georgia by 31 points. Colorado lost handily to 14th place in the Big 10 Nebraska. Iowa State beat Iowa by a point so I guess there's that.

The team has improved. There has been growth. I am very optimistic about the next 2 games and next season. If they can win 8 games this season, that is a solid college football season. I get it, they didn't have KSU or ISU, but TCU was picked to finish10th in the league with the schedule they had. This is a crazy big 12 season. Recruiting the portal will be a huge task.

IMO, if there was a year to play OU and KSU, it's this year ... Both teams have taken a step backwards. At least, you could blame OU's on schedule, but still, there offense is the worst. KSU has lost 2 in a row (Houston and ASU) and just isn't playing well. Both of those games would be super competitive, and playing the way we are now, I think we could win.

I am glad that we at least are seeing some improvement this year... I am not gonna worry about the schedule at all... That said, we've gotta go get some dudes on the DL in order to make the next step upward.

3 weeks until the portal opens and it’s filling up with talent already.
I bet coaches are gearing up for an all out effort, sort of like their jobs depend on it. : >)
Probably a long shot for TCU, but Texas WR Johntay Cook from DeSoto would be an amazing add.
