3 weeks until the portal opens and it’s filling up with talent already.
I bet coaches are gearing up for an all out effort, sort of like their jobs depend on it. : >)
Probably a long shot for TCU, but Texas WR Johntay Cook from DeSoto would be an amazing add.
I have talked to several people and they all said the young man needs to mature. I am not sure we want another Zach Evans type situation when the Frogs are building a pretty solid team culture. Now the young man is very talented and hope he finds a good place to play and figure things out.

Zach Evans is a burned out permanently injured player that was acquired out of desperation after the ‘22 season. His biggest contribution was an 18 yd run back in 2023.
Johntay Cook is perfectly healthy, has 4.4 speed, and is probably the #1 Soph WR that will be available this year. Yes, he got frustrated in a very crowded WR room and left the team several weeks ago, but so what. Lots of HS stars sign with UT and become disillusioned. That said, he’s probably going to ATM.
Team culture is nice, but no matter what, if TCU doesn’t win, all that warm fuzzy team culture is going down the tubes. It’s time to bring in talent and skills that can win now and worry about culture later.

Totally disagree. Selfish knuckleheads ruin teams. Not saying that's what Cook is, but it certainly seems like he could be that.

One 5-star WR who isn't totally bought in to being a leader and a team player isn't worth taking a chance on. More trouble that it's worth. I'd rather have zero 5 stars than one or two of them, unless that one or two are going to be the hardest workers on the team. Having one kid like Zack Evans, who dictates his own playing time, and who every kid looks up to, is an absolute locker room killer.

Yes Cook has all the talent in the world, but his actions and attitude are what will keep him from being great. I hope he will mature and grow up. I wish him nothing but the best but just not as a Frog. They do not need guys that were dismissed or "kick off the team". Those kinds of players do hurt teams winning chances.

Ketchum also revealed that Cook is already looking for another landing spot, with the transfer portal set to open in early December. Richardson added that this move doesn't come as a surprise, saying that this has been "building" since the spring. He also mentioned things such as showing up to meetings on time or at all, along with having a good attitude, were things that Cook was not doing.

School is 40k plus students but only had a football program since 2015. Recently fired the only head coach the school had and didn’t do it right.
That school has had a rough year. Living thru shutdowns due to Hurricane Helene, flooding, and a sizable tornado. They could use some good luck for a change.

Yup, that was weird. I totally got Zach Evans confused with Trey Sanders. Wasnt thinking back to 2020.

GP got Zach out of HS. He was set up to be a primadonna. Zach came into a backfield where Darwin Barlow was thought to be our best back, and I’m sure TCU promised him the world. Not every 5 star is a complete narcissist
But was Evans really the problem you think he was? …or is some of it butt hurt cause he left?
As a freshman, Zach had the 2nd most RB carries at 7.7 ypc, highest on the team.
In ‘21 Zach only played in 6 games for TCU before ending his season with a turf toe vs. Tech. In only 6 games he recorded 648 rushing yards, 5 rushing TDs, 10 receptions, 130 receiving yards, and 1 receiving TD.
6 games = 778 total yards and 6 TDs. Averages to 1,556 on the season.
We could use some of that right now!
Every winning team must have its stars, hopefully their head is on straight.

I was never a fan.

The kid's recruitment was a circus and he didn't even play in his HS team's state championship game because of disciplinary reasons. Wouldn't those be two giant red flags? And then he comes here and acts like an entitled ass. And because he's "Zack Evans, greatest recruit in TCU history" all the other kids think he's awesome and someone to be looked up to. And then he'd beg out of games because he didn't want to get hurt as he was saving himself for the NFL, and his head coach gladly complied, because the only way he thought he could have amazing players like Zack Evans play for him was to kiss their ass. That was about precisely the moment GP's career started really nosediving.

He was a locker room cancer, plain and simple. That's why the team stunk while he was here. I don't care how many ypc he had. Kendre had just as many without all the BS. Now Evans is probably trying to latch on to the CFL team or something.

Cook is the biggest disappointment on the team. He’s got great wheels, but his brain won’t let him stick his foot in the ground and head up field thru tackle gaps.
Maybe that’s because he has shown no ability to break tackles.
Cook was a 3,000 yard back in HS with 29TDs and an 8.4ypc. It’s unbelievable that he can’t run the middle of the field.
Unless he‘s going to completely change his running style, he should portal.….or tryout for WR.

SEC target 5-star RB Zach Evans sent home from Texas state championship game over reported rules violation.

  • Aug. 2019: Evans suspended multiple games for a violation of team rules.
  • Dec. 21: Evans doesn’t play in North Shore’s state championship game because of another violation of team rules
  • Dec. 19: He signs a National Letter of Intent with Georgia
  • Jan. 7: Evans is released from his LOI by Georgia and free to resume contact and take visits to other programs.
Some people were glad he was gone, myself included. Selfish player.
I would say there was a pattern. GEORGIA let him out of his NIL and they keep everyone around for crimes and reckless driving.
Yes, he was talented but was not worth the headache.
TCU record while Evans was there 2021- 6-4 and 2020 5-7.
TCU record without Evans 13-2....addition by subtraction.
TCU does not need guys that are selfish players that will not follow rules. So not having cook will be ok. There are some talented young receivers on the roster and 1 maybe 2 coming in.

Me neither, I hated that guy.
However, Kendre is the only other TCU back with at least 40 carries that has averaged 7.0 ypc multiple times. There’s only a handful that did it once.

That’s hilarious.
TCU went from 5 & 6 wins to 13 wins 100% because of the switch from GP to Dykes. How in the world you could conflate it to Evans leaving is baffling.

Being a 5 star has nothing to do with anything. Saying all 5 stars are F’d in the head like Evans is just wrong. We need all the 4 and 5 stars we can find.

I am glad to entertain you. Oh, so now Dykes is the reason TCU won 13 games?....I thought Dykes won with GP players. That is what many on this board have said. AND not 1 time did I say all 5 stars messed in the head. I said Johntay cooks was/is an issue and that Evans is an issue proven by his track record. Sometimes teams get better when certain players are no longer around. Its a locker room culture. I would not want a 5 star just because a recruiting service labels them as a 5 star and they have attitude and or behavior issues. Give the players guys that will follow the rules, put the team first, and have good work ethic no matter if they have stars or not. That is what made TCU successful.

Wow, that's quite a stretch. We did go from 5 & 6 wins, for a variety of reasons, one IMO that we got rid of program cancers like Zack Evans.

Where did I ever say all 5-stars are f'ed in the head? We're talking about Johntay Cook. He apparently was a pain in the ass and also apparently didn't have much of a work ethic since he was skipping meetings. We don't need that kind of 4 or 5 star kid, so no, we don't need all of them we can find.

I’m really sort of surprised TCU is doing as well as they are. I’ve always followed the old school methodology of run the ball, stop the run, & pressure the QB to win.
TCU can’t do any of those things. What we do have is a near 4,000 yd QB and a top 30 scoring offense.
Avalos got fired last year because he couldn’t pressure the QB, but we have fewer sacks this year and we’re giving up 170+ rushing per game.
It is an absolute MUST for TCU to substantially improve the DL via next month’s portal. We need 3 big aggressive D linemen, at least 2, which won’t be easy.
I think this apathetic mindset is easy to fall into. I'm on the hardline that Dykes should still be let go at end of season, but I know the buyout is astronomical. Even if we win out and win a bowl game, this will not be a successful season vs expectations. I am proud of the players in the last few games but 2 def coordinators in a row... A decent rush defense would have taken this team from bad to great... And the best we can do is 86th in FBS? Keep in mind this is against the softest big 12 schedule imaginable.
