Clutch Points: Ranking 10 greatest TCU football players of all time

I 100% get taking into team success/character/legacy, but I can't be alone in thinking Boykin could be above Duggan (and arguably Andy) in all time-rankings. Though I guess this ranking didn't come with any formal criteria.

He holds almost every major passing record for the school, and in my opinion was part of the 2nd best team in recent history only behind the rose bowl team.

*I would still have Andy 1 spot higher for consistency, Boykin's first 2 years were quite a rollercoaster.

I think 2014 as better than 2010, and Boykin was better than all of them in his prime. Similar to Duggan, you just can’t underestimate a QB that can easily run for 15 -30 yards on a single play.

Without Gary’s panic playcalling and bogus committee, we were likely national champs.

The list is a good one. Needs to be a top 25 list to get all of the memorable ones mentioned above in the thread.
My list would include (not necessarily in this order);

The above should likely be everyone's top 6

Darrell Lester
Aaron Schobel
Andy Dalton
Max Duggan
Josh Doctson
Mike Renfro
Kelly Blackwell
Bo Schobel
Jason Verrett
Norm Evans
Jerry Hughes
Jeremy Kerley

Kyle Clifton
Sherrill Headrick
Michael Reeder

Honorable Mentions:
Jaden Oberkrom

Mickey McCarty ????????
You disagree with me including him? I’m not old enough to have seen him play, but many have said he is one of the greatest athletes in TCU history. I believe he was drafted in baseball, the ABA, and the NBA and he played a season in the NFL at tight end for the Chiefs. I assumed he was a safe choice.

Tony Jeffery - He's number 2 in rushing stats behind LT. Also had the single game rushing record at TCU until LT.

For some reason, I didn't think of Boykin. I believe he belongs - his last 2 years were tops.

I thought of Mike Renfro and Stanley Washington, but I didn't become a TCU fan until well after their time, so know little about their time at TCU, other than they are both remembered as excellent wide receivers.

Here's a good thread extender:

Who are the players involved in the most memorable PLAYS in TCU history? This will unfortunately shade to recent times since most of us didn't see Swink and almost nobody here saw O'Brien or Baugh play.

I'm talking about single plays, not full game performances.

I'll start:

Tank's Rose Bowl stop
Marvin White's hit
Aaron Green's tipped ball at Tech
McFarland's end zone int in the Peach Bowl
QJ's pull away run against Michigan
Griffin Kell's kick at Baylor

Two that are really full game achievement awards:

Kohlhausen's run at the end of the Alamo
Duggan's TD at the end of the B12 championship

I'm obviously missing some big ones.

What say you?

TCU /OU 2014. OU driving late 4th quarter at TCU 22 yard line. Marcus Mallett stops OU’s Perine for no gain on 4th and one to seal the game.
Would have also accepted Dawson's pick six from that game.
Absolutely. It turned the game around. But I’m an old guy who has sat through more beat downs by OU than I care to remember. With time left on the clock, and OU driving at our 22, in the past, 99 times out of 100 they score and win. My appreciation for Mallett’s play is it was the closer. He went low for a one on one take down of Perine for no gain.

He may be an asterisk (*), but I think that Ray Rhodes should be mentioned. Had Pittman not driven him (and others...Dibble) off, he would certainly have been on the top 20 list.

I'll never forget that I was sitting behind Tony Jefferey in Art History class in the 1986 timeframe. I was extremely tired from being at the PUB the night b4. I started some uncontrollable Yawning and "gleeking" and spat upon his shoulder/neck. I said nothing and he said nothing. I have felt somewhat bad about that ever sense and would certainly apologize today.

TCUDOC, I played football at TCU when Mickey McCarty was there and I'm here to tell you he was one exceptional athlete but did not play football for the Frogs. When he was a Frog he played Basketball and Baseball and was exceptional at both. He did not play FB for the Frogs though. If my memory serves me correctly, the story goes he was drafted by the Chiefs to play tight end ... he was that good of an athlete!!! He was also drafted by the NBA, MLB, AFL & ABA (Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Indians, Kansas City Chiefs & Dallas Chaparrals respectively). He chose to play football because the signing bonuses were higher (at that time) at least that is what I recall was the source of his decision. Played one year. I believe he injured his pitching arm plaaying for the Chiefs and that put an end to his baseball career chances. He was a professional softball pitcher until poor health put an end to his athletic career. Read obituary attached below
