Carl has passed on, he was the punter and back-up qb in the mid 40's.
Holds record for longest punt in TCU history ( 94 yards in 1947 against Oklahoma A&M).
With a strong south wind, he spiraled a kick that cleared the safety by 20 yards and bounded onward.
The ball was snapped from the 3 yard line and rolled dead at the 3 on the north end-- truly amazing!
Carl was from Arlington and there is a park named for him in that city. RIP Mr. Knox.

He was a legend, great guy. Unfortunately, the 94 yard record didn't stand. I don't really see how a 99 yard punt is possible. If it's from the 1 yard line and goes out on the opponent's 1 yard line, isn't that 98 yards?

Today marks the 67th anniversary of the longest punt in NCAA and college football history. Pat Brady, the specialist for the University of Nevada, set the record in 1950 with a 99-yard punt against Loyola Marymount.Oct 28, 2017

Yeah, you're right. But I knew Carl (started TCU the year after he did that record kick) and I know he hated it that just three years later that guy was credited with a 99 yard one. And still don't know how they can measure a 99 yard kick.

ball snapped at the one is punted into the other end zone?

One more thing about Mr. Knox, who was a really good qb and back-up to Lindy Berry.
He threw a TD pass to put the final nail that beat #6 Texas and Bobby Layne 14-0 in 1946.
A-A Layne was so incensed that he stood in Carter with fist waving and made a speech.
"We didn't lose the game, the clock just ran out on us"-- Dutch had used a 6-1- 4 defense to throttle Bobby.

Thanks for the post, Leap Frog. I found it while checking search engines for my own name, Carl Knox III, and it's fun to see people talking about Dad.

Through the years he told me a couple things that might be fun for you to know: he said there was no wind when he kicked his 94 yarder (I had asked him with raised eyebrow); and he said the ball was so light off his foot, he barely felt it. (Sweet spot!) Also, with the extra time it took the receivers to run back and pick up the ball, Dad was able to run the length of the field and, bizarrely, make the tackle. Just one of those wacko dream-plays we love to see, that come along once in a blue moon. (I asked why he didn’t do that every game, and he had no answer…lol)
