Where are all of the good OL recruits going?

Parker did some interesting analysis of highly rated OL recruits and their concentration at "good" football programs. It's not ground breaking to say the big programs get the best recruits but it just reinforces that without competent coaching there is no way to compete with the OUs of the world.

We have won without blue chips in the past, we can do it again. We will never get the elite Olinemen, we will have to develop them. We have failed in developing our olinemen the last few years.

agreed, not going to say that recruiting doesn't matter but i do believe offensive line is one area where the recruiting lists are incredibly inaccurate on talent down the list

lucas was a 3 star and supposedly the 50th ranked offensive tackle prospect in the country and the kid did a damn good job first year on.

consider the offensive lines for clemson during their 2015 and 2016 seasons when they split national title games against bama

that offensive line was comprised of 2 3-stars, 2 4-stars, a 5-star, a 4-star tight end prospect, and a 3-star defensive end prospect

we saw it with the frogs offensive line group in 2014 and 2016.

Was I supposed to type something here?
There's a wee bit of Self Fulfilling Prophecy here, in that the "Recruiting Gurus" always grant extra starsies to recruits of the Brand Name Programs. Thus it isn't surprising that they get the "higher rated" recruits.

True, but those teams tens to be more consistent than we have.

look at the offensive line recruiting classes for iowa and wisconsin then see were those two programs stack up with those schools in putting offensive linemen in the nfl over the past decade

as i mentioned before, clemson went to back to back championship games without an offensive line filled with elite recruits

Now...do the analysis on where Cumbie and Meach (and GP) have spent our scholarships>>>WR's

Then GP has us go into a slow down Air raid, which is only useful if you try to run 90 plays. So, we waste WR scholarships so they aren't tired, but they aren't tired because we only run 60 plays. But we swap out 4 start studs for 2 star duds because they want playing time...but then end up keeping them benched because of course...so they transfer.

Then we wonder why we don't have any bench strength for OL and DL.

If you can't sign the best OL, then you better have a coach that can make who you do sign better. That's where we are falling behind.

interesting thing is two highly regarded offensive line recruits started for clemson early during the 2015 and 2016 seasons when they played bama in the title game so they saw a bit of defensive talent, but somehow highly rated offensive line recruits can't play in this line and before wyoming frog starts rambling about ruining kids before they are ready in point to the frogs 2012 offensive line that started 3 true freshmen who ended up somehow being solid players

So there's no way to compete with OU and their 12 but Texas and their 10 is no problem at all. I guess the cutoff must be 11.

best i can figure the covid must have gotten hayes as i am trying to understand how he could be any more overmatched that what we have seen inside for the frogs offensive line

There is no position group in football that takes more coaching and development than OL. For the most part your looking at kids and trying to project what they will be like 3 years down the road. That’s super difficult. You not only have to a supreme evaluator of talent, you have to be a supreme developer of that talent because rarely can or should an OLman contribute right away.

We’ve done pretty well with OL until recently. Right now development and coaching is a dud.

From what I understand, Covid got Hayes twice but he finally worked himself back in to the 2 deep. If we can dominate against KU we should finally get to see him.

Couple of things..You have 10 prospects listed and 7 are Underclassman. Even the most talented OL isn’t usually any good until year 3 on campus. Keep in mind that 7 play in virtually every game so in theory you really need about 18 talented scholarship OLman at a minimum. That meens you need 4-5 in every class. Up until 3 years ago we were often only bringing in 3 a cycle. That’s how we got depleted. Next year we should finally have a solid number of game ready bodies to create some real competition up front.

Any year that we don’t take a combination of 8-10 trench (OL/DL) players, we should all be concerned. It eventually catches up to us either through injuries or busts.
