UTSA Coach Jeff Traylor

Because East Texas is far enough away that a kid will still feel like he is "going off to college" and there is not another major competitor in their direct area

People on this board really underestimate how many HS kids pick a school starting with the need for it to not be in the town they grew up in...

where we are really screwing up and Sonny Dykes is making hay is that a significant portion of these kids also realize after a year away from home and family - that they would like to come back to be closer to home

Of the 12 Horned Frog grads in my family tree - 8 of them started at another school and realized after Freshman year that the grass was actually greener back in Ft Worth....

Well that’s not where the talent is so that would be a weak strategy. Plenty of schools can get kids to stay close to home and play there.

well Louisiana "isn't where the talent is" in the US either - but we do pretty well finding the gems from that state that don't want to go to LSU and often become the leaders of our best teams....

We don't need 125 football players every year - we need around 25 or so and if we can get 5 of them from East Texas and another 5 from the boot - that is a lot better that fighting UT, OU, Aggy, etc to get the entire 25+ out of the 300 that are in the major metro areas of Texas

There’s good talent in LA, we were talking specifically ETX.

Has UTSA ranked #23 in just his second year, was born in Texas and won Big 12 recruiter of the year in 2016 while at UT. He beat Illinois earlier in the year with UTSA. Illinois just beat #7 Penn St.
Tap the breaks about Ill. beating Penn State. Sean Clifford was about 45 percent able to go in that game. Franklin should have never put him in. He is only a highlight when he can use his legs. And he couldn't.

Traylor strikes be as one who would be much like Matt Wells in the P5.

Why do you want to recruit East Texas when most of the talent these days is in or near the DFW, Austin, & Houston areas? Sure there’s some talent in the smaller towns but we can’t even win kids over in our backyard which is littered w talent.
East Texas, and Western La. are loaded with physical players with speed. While there a bigger high school teams in the metro areas, there are players in East Texas that would come from behind the Pine Curtain the curb stomp the first ball carrier they can. In these metro areas, the physical play seems to take the back seat to speed offenses.

Why would he be limited to recruiting east Texas only?

Never said that, I just don’t think there’s a lot of talent there so it doesn’t seem to be a big bonus for me when thinking about the next coach. Having LA ties is big though as we get some quality kids from there.

We have no idea how Traylor will do at this level.

Fair enough. He could be a total flop.

I think it's a good hire though. Checklist is pretty good from Tech's perspective:

--Has been the boss, not just an assistant
--Knows the state/region; isn't moving out of his geographic comfort zone (e.g. Charlie Strong)
--Has won games as a head coach by getting the most out of the talent he has/can recruit to where he is

That's what you're looking for as a middling Big XII program. No one's a sure bet, but he fits the bill.
