The anticipation and excitement is building in Cancun for Jerry Lopez's attempt to tie or set a record for the most titles won in a single day by alums of a single U.S. university on the pro tennis tour. Basically, like Sharm el Sheikh and Antalya and a number of tourist locations around the planet, Cancun holds a series of consecutive ITF events over the span of a few weeks just to give the well-heeled tourists an opportunity to see high level tennis while vacationing at a tourist trap. Lopez routinely takes advantage of this and gets a bunch of tourneys in. He's got kind of a sweet gig - he's on the Mexican Davis Cup team and is one of their top players, so he's kind of a minor celebrity on the Mexican scene. He doesn't play a lot of tourneys and doesn't seem all that interested in the kind of grind that Rybo is on in constantly trying to improve his ranking; essentially, he just plays events in Mexico and only occasionally ventures across the border for a U.S. event (or sometimes the Dominican Republic). But that's good enough to maintain a high enough ranking to qualify for the events that he wants to play. He got into Los Cabos a year or so ago by teaming with Cam Norrie in doubles for his first-ever ATP event, but he primarily just plays ITF events. He's currently ranked ATP#640, with a CH of #505. Angele is from France and is currently ranked #891, with a CH of 807. Lopez will be favored today.

And they're off - Angele serving first. Lopez has a lot of motivation to reclaim his 4th highest Frog pro ranking given what Gray did this morning in the RSA.

0-1. Angele holds.
1-3. Lopez is down a break.

Lopez now trails 1-4. Not looking good in Cancun.

Yeah, what should Alastair do? Rybo jumped right into Challenger qualies and hardly ever qualified and his ranking sank and he spent over a year getting it back by grinding it out through multiple Futures events all over the globe. Should Alastair move right into Challengers or should he build up his ranking with the Futures (where he's obviously having success)? It'd be more money and points... But there's a risk/reward aspect to it.

1-5. Jerry is getting blitzkrieged.
1-6. Maybe if I switch to Spanish, he'll do better. Vamos Gerardo!

amor-uno. Pero fue mejor.
amor-dos. Que lastima!
uno-dos. Hay de mi!
uno-tres. Disculpe, pero no me gusta...
uno-cuatro.
uno-cinco. En ingles o espanol, no hay diferencia.

En solamente un hora, Lopez falls 1 and 1. TCU had 2 finalists today, but only one champion. Congrats to AG!

Alex Rybakov got the week started for the pro Frogs with an easy 3 and 1 W over Carlos Sanchez Jover this morning at Murcia. He's now into the main draw and will play Daniel Rincon (Spain; ATP#1209) tomorrow morning at 5:20 a.m. (CDT).

Feel like Rybo is right on the edge.

Gray is remarkable.
Alex is at ATP #350 as of today which is 1 down from his CH achieved last week. That's good enough to make the qualies at virtually any Challenger; he needs to get high enough to make the Challenger main draws to save himself from the qualie grind and the potential of earning no points if he loses in the qualies. And his 2021 earnings have increased to $17,946, which is nowhere near enough to self-finance, but is getting better (he's at $86,413 in career earnings). So, I agree he's right on the edge of becoming an established pro. What he really needs to do is to win a Challenger. But he's set up well with the 2-year roll gradually tapering off because he's likely to either move up or stay fairly steady because of all his hard work in the Spring and summer.

Alastair is up to ATP#719 (not sure if that includes yesterday's title) in singles and #412 in doubles. He's earned $17,857 this year (already) - winning 2 $25,000 purse tourney titles has him close to Rybo's year-long earnings. If he keeps up his current level of play, the sky is the limit given how fast he's risen in just a few weeks..

Norrie v. Koepfer is scheduled for 2:50 p.m. (CDT) tomorrow in San Diego, which is a new ATP250 tourney, which got a 1-year exemption due to the implications from COVID and the cancellation at Indian Wells. It's got a good field, with Rublev as the top seed. Koepfer, formerly of Tulane, has had almost as good of a season as Cam - he's ranked #66 and is from Germany.

I haven't found any listings for our guys in Lubbock and I'm not sure if they're there. Also, I haven't found a listing for Gray in Pretoria as yet.

Rybo won his first round main draw match fairly easily (3 and 2) over Rincon, so he has now advanced to the Round of 16 at the Murcia Challenger. His next opponent is TBD. Gray's first round main draw match in Pretoria will be against Asaf Friedler, an 19-year-old Israeli with an ATP ranking of NR - Alastair got another special exemption and was spared having to go through qualies again. Norrie v. Koepfer later this afternoon in San Diego.

Norrie dispatches Koepfer in straights. Good win. The San Diego ATP250 is stacked relative to a typical 250 tournament.
Next up for Cam is the winner between Kevin Anderson and Dan Evans. If it's Evans, it sets up a battle for who's the best Brit (although Andy Murray is also at San Diego)..

Alastair Gray got a very easy 2 and 1 W over unranked Asaf Friedler at Pretoria this morning and has advanced to the Round of 16 where he will play Makoto Ochi, a 25-year-old Japanese player who has an ATP ranking of 552.

At Murcia (Spain), Alex Rybakov got the day off at the Murcia Challenger but he will next face top seeded Roberto Carballes Baena in the Round of 16, a Spaniard with an ATP ranking of #88 and a CH of #72. This may be the highest ranked player Rybo has ever played and he will be a decided underdog.

Gerardo Lopez Villasenor (or Jerry Lopez if you prefer English) has remained in Cancun and will play his opening round shortly against American Emil Reinberg in the Round of 32. Reinberg has a ranking of #1996 - Jerry is the 2nd seed and will be heavily favored.

Cam Norrie is into the Round of 16 and awaits the winner of the Evans-Anderson match which is scheduled for later today in San Diego. Denis Shapavolov is the likely opponent in the quarters if form holds.

The Frogs apparently decided to skip Lubbock and none are scheduled. Next up presumably will be the All-American in Tulsa next week.

Lopez v. Reinberg in Cancun has started. Jerry is serving first and leads 3-2 early...
3-all. Still even on serve. He's also in the doubles, teaming with Gabriel Roveri Sidney.
3-4. Jerry gets broken... (sigh)
3-5. Not looking good in this first set.
4-5! Gerardo gano!
5-all. Jerry fights back to even on serve!
6-5. Lopez holds after multiple deuces. Jerry's CH is ATP#505.
6-all. Into a breaker...
Yes! Lopez takes the breaker and the first set 7-6 (7-5)! A lot tougher than I expected. On to the 2nd set.

0-1 in the 2nd set. Multiple deuces, but Jerry couldn't convert.
1-all.
1-2. Reinberg holds at love.
1-3. Reinberg gets the early break.
It looks like Jerry has retired and given Reinberg a walkover...

Gray beat Ochi in three sets this morning - 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 - to advance to the quarters in Pretoria tomorrow where he will face Rio Naguchi, another Japanese player, with an ATP rank of #492 and a CH of #397.

Rybo lost 2 and 2 at Murcia in the Round of 16 to Roberto Carballes Baena.

Cam Norrie will face Dan Evans in the Round of 16 later today in San Diego (scheduled for 1:30 (CDT)) in a battle to determine who is the best British player.

Norrie v. Evans has started in San Diego. Not on the Tennis Channel though (and I've got to head to work). 0-1 early (Evans serving first).
1-4 now. Very bad start.

This was an important match merely because it was a fight for British supremacy. Glad to see Cam fight back for a W with both the first set breaker and the 2nd set. Probably Shapo next in the quarters.
