SB Nation: TCU Football Bowl Projections

That doesn't make sense. Why would Donati decline a bowl invite based on a bad experience from 22 years ago, for a bowl that we've accepted an invite from and played in since then at that?
When Donati was appointed AD in 2017, the bad 2002 Liberty Bowl experience was 15 years in the past, not 22. And you could equally well ask, why would Donati decline a football bowl invitation based on a bad 2016 TCU experience that occurred more than a year before he became AD?

At the time of Donati's 2017 appointment, many of the longtime, oil-wealthy, alumni lettermen-boosters who helped fund the TCU football resurgence (Dick Lowe, Hunter Enis, etc) were still very active and in-play in influencing TCU football decisions. As public interviews of the time clearly indicate, many were not yet "over" their bitter memories of what they considered the unfair 1986 football sanctions for violations TCU self-detected and self-reported. After all, most national college football powers, from Penn State to Alabama, were doing the exact same thing at the time, yet were treated by the NCAA with kid gloves. Even benefitted from NCAA officials "looking the other way" where their programs were concerned.

By the time Donati became AD, much of this was all well in the past, but equally well remembered and resented by TCU football's most prominant, most generous, and and most influential boosters. In fact, after the 1986 disaster, Dick Lowe became a campus pariah and was not welcomed by TCU for more than a decade afterward. It was not until a few years after the "Great TCU Football Turnaround" vs USC in the 1998 Sun Bowl that this changed. and Lowe's tarnished TCU image was "rehabbed." No AD who overlooks such well-heeled program-supporting people can look forward to a long or prosperous carreer.

Yes the Liberty Bowl is approx. $6m and NM Bowl approx. $1m, but the $ just goes to conf and gets divided up. So it‘s not like we won’t get our share of all bowls.

Still this just can’t be true!!!! Nobody is that stupid. There are so many reasons not to reject the Liberty Bowl. The difference in the opponent alone.
Playing Louisiana is a Kobayashi Maru!
One would think. But quite a few indicated where it was posted and that source is usually spot on.

Just go skiing in NM.
Buddy and I took a roadie from Texas to San Francisco in '83. I was at DLI there and had been home for Christmas, and we left on the 26th headed west. I had removed the heat and A/C from my 66 Supersport Chevelle, because, "horsepower," lol.
We hit the worst winter storm of the year in West Texas, and for the last couple hours on I-20 we were pelted with sleet to the point that the windshield was a sheet of ice. Stopped at a gas station in the middle of nowhere and bought cans of de-ice, so the last hour or so I was driving with my left hand out the window spraying de-ice so I could see to drive. OBTW, we couldn't close the trunk because our surfboards were sticking out too far, so it was held down with bungee cords.
Went to Kmart the next morning and bought a little space heater and wired it up under the dash to make just enough heat to make a basketball-sized clear spot for me to see to drive.
2nd night we made Santa Fe and decided to stay an extra day and ski.
It was slip-n-slide all the way up the mountain next morning, I'm convinced the only reason we stayed on the road was because the car's rear end was loaded so heavy. The HIGH temp on the mountain that day was 4. FOUR.
Back then there were no services at the mountain- no gear, no food, just basically a place to rent skis and go to the bathroom. First run up the lift that morning, I dropped a glove which disappeared under a foot of fresh powder. Couldn't buy gloves there, so I just tried to tough it out. Made two runs before I surrendered, and spent the rest of the day hiding out in the lodge, waiting for my buddy to get his fill. Skiing there was epic, no crowds, great snow, we had a ball and I've been back several times since, but that was maybe the coldest I've ever been in my life, and feel lucky I didn't get frostbite.
For quality of skiing though, notwithstanding crowds, Taos is the bomb and can be the equal of any other mountain in the US, IMHO. Al's Run is as intense and technical as any other I've ever seen in Colorado, Montana, or anywhere else.

If we participate in this bowl, it is over for our program.

Wish people wouldn’t just make [ Finebaum ] up. From the FW Star Telegram.

The social reaction online was one of disappointment by TCU fans as they were expecting an opportunity to play another power conference opponent. There were also questions about whether former athletics director Jeremiah Donati turned down a potential invite to the Liberty Bowl. Donati accepted the AD job at South Carolina and the Gamecocks officially announced the hire on Thursday. The Star-Telegram reached out to TCU and a school spokesperson was adamant that TCU didn’t and wouldn’t turn down an invite to a bowl game and that TCU’s selection was based in part on the log jam of 8-4 teams in the Big 12. The three other teams listed above were picked for the more appealing destinations and matchups.

You believe what lying mouthpieces tell the lying media? Just because it's published by the Star-T doesn't mean it's true.

Albuquerque dining FYI

El Sabor de Juarez is just outside the airport 2 miles from the stadium and opens at 8 a.m. Fine pick for a Saturday AM breakfast

Also, eat a Blake's Lot-A-Burger with green chile

And Duran's Central Diner is an old-time drugstore counter

Won't salvage the trip to Albuquerque but might make it more tolerable

This guy says since Donati is no longer at TCU, Donati was not involved. When I asked when the process of declining the Liberty began, he replied that you can't decline when you're not invited. He hasn't replied when I asked why TCU was not invited, nor why a team we beat and finished ahead of did get the invite.

Shreve,
That’s not the source folks said earlier when some of us asked. It was a fairly reliable name.

There is no connection to the NM bowl to Big 12 teams according to Lindy's or Phil Steel. Only shenanigans by ESPN/Disney would place TCU in the NM Bowl. What I mean by Shenanigans is that ESPN has been evaluating eyeballs on bowl games and TCU may not warrant Liberty or Houston bowl viewership. New Mexico Bowl is historically 17 k attendance.

I guess ESPN is hoping that with TCU in the game someone will actually watch it?! That is the only reason I can think that you would send TCU to this game.

At least TCU has home WBB game on the 29th. That will be at least worth watching, and the opponent is Brown. It might actually be a more competitive game. It will also be a real D1 athletic venue.

I don't think anybody realizes what a shot to the TCU program this is. The New México Bowl is a bowl for the AAC and Mountain West. This is a historical precedent. Sdykes should stop being a [ muschi ] and sue the [ "illegitimate Baylor boys" ]. Sue them for fraud defamation and the rest. If we participate in this bowl, it is over for our program.
That’s a bit dramatic.

Louisiana is going to be fired up for this game too. They might even bring more fans. Regardless of who plays in the game, they better bring their A game. A loss could deflate the momentum the team gained the 2nd half of the season
Concerned about this. Hoping not a reverse Sun Bowl!
