KBTX: Dennis Franchione announces book release: Tough Times Never Last - The Coach Fran Story

BrewingFrog

Was I supposed to type something here?
The night of the last game of that season, "Eric Dickerson Night" at SMU, there was still a number of Frogs in the stands. When the game ended, we were chanting "Stay, Fran, stay!" No one really expected him to, but the message was clear.

A good friend noted, "Yeah, he'll go and make a lot of money, but he will never hear love like that from fans ever again."

My son and I were among those who joined in that chant, Brewing.

Sadly, we agreed that it was highly unlikely that he would…

stay, that is.

Go Frogs!

I MC’d a portion of the Coach of the Year Awards banquet in Houston, the year Fran was nominated.

He refused to attend the event unless they agreed to introduce him as, “the Head Coach of Alabama.”

Since I was working as one of the hosts, I knew I would have backstage access, so I wore my TCU tie.

When I was introduced to Fran, he smiled and said, “Are you an alum?” I responded, “Yes! I’m Proud of TCU!”

He grinned again and said, “You should be.” To which I responded, “So should YOU!”

One of the other MCs whispered to me, “That was cold brother, but I LOVED it!”

Go Frogs!
Cold as The Night King but….well done & well executed!

I've been around him and spoke with him a couple of times when he had quietly been back at TCU for anniversaries of the 2 bowl teams he coached here. My thoughts on him softened because of it. He'll talk to anyone and is very pleasant. He'll talk about games and seems genuinely interested in you and gives you his undivided attention. At this point TCU folks don't really have anything that could benefit him, so I think that means something. He was there to see his old TCU players and it was obvious they meant something to him. I distinctly remember getting the vibe that he has definitely been humbled. There was not a hint of pretentiousness. Like you were talking to your next door neighbor. He dropped GP off at our doorstep on his way out, so my burning hatred for him has softened somewhat over the years. If he had come off like an arrogant sphincter I'd have nothing but bad words to say about him.

I got the same impression of him that evening at the Coach of the Year gala.

The thing I found the most irritating was when he was introduced as a nominee, the video featured Alabama highlights - despite the fact he had not yet coached even one down in Tuscaloosa.

He was being nominated for his accomplishments at TCU, but he didn't even mention that fact that I could notice. It was all about Bama and “Roll Tide.” I was thoroughly disgusted with it.

I have always maintained that Fran did two good things for TCU: he took the job and he quit the job. Had he not done those things, our beloved alma mater would never have hired Gary Patterson.

For both of those, I will be forever grateful to Coach Dennis Franchione.

Go Frogs!

Possibly a book junkie -the ultra-die-hard sports fan will buy and read until he realizes there's not much to this book. Just trying to revive his reputation one last time. ?Remember me.... I'm an ex fartball college coach. Yip, I remember you as a fart all right..

Its not like he sucked there. He turned them around and started winning immediately. They were 3-8 the year before he got there. He went 7–5 his first year, 10–3 his second. Won them their first bowl game in 5 years his first year, then sanctions kicked in and no bowl game his second. If he hadn't been so stupid and gone to A&M, who knows what he what have accomplished at Bama. He worried too much about the sanctions and not as much about how hard it would be to win at A&M.

Fact…Facts…Facts! Why do you always let facts get in the way of a good put down?!!?

It worked out for the best for TCU. Had Fran stayed GP would have taken a HC position somewhere else and we in all likelihood do not become the program and university that we are today. GP becoming head coach was the best scenario and outcome. Fran's stats with and without GP bear that out.
