Tuohimaa finishes MWC action with a 7-1 singles record, Sahoo earns first collegiate win

ALBUQUERQUE – The TCU women’s tennis team concluded the 2010 regular season with a Mountain West Conference win over New Mexico Sunday, 6-1, at the Linda Estes Tennis Center. The victory snaps a four-match losing streak for the Horned Frogs against the league, dropping all four matches by 4-3 scores.

“We finished the regular season and conference with a victory,” TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond said. "We are looking forward to the tournament and preparing this week and hoping to win a fifth-straight MWC trophy and make NCAA’s for a seventh-straight time. Our goals are now right in front of us and we look forward to the challenge.”

For the first time in three matches, TCU won the doubles point. After senior Nina Munch-Soegaard and junior Idunn Hertzberg won from the No. 2 position, the 50th-ranked squad of sophomore Kayla Duncan and junior Katariina Tuohimaa clinched the early 1-0 advantage from the top court.

In singles, Tuohimaa gave TCU a 2-0 advantage, as she defeated Kristin Eggleston, 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 2 match. No. 52 Munch-Soegaard followed by beating Anya Villanueva, 6-3, 6-2 at the top court to give the Frogs a 3-0 lead. The senior from Amarillo, Texas moved just three wins from tying Teresa Dobson for the fifth-most career singles victories in TCU history.

Newcomer Shalini Sahoo took down Manumea Durie, 6-1, 6-3, from the fifth flight for her first career collegiate win to clinch the team victory for TCU. Sahoo saw her first action with the Frogs this weekend after missing the first three months of the season sue to a knee injury.

“It felt really good to be out here with my team this weekend,” Sahoo said. “I have been wanting to travel with the team all season and I could really feel my body trying to work hard after missing so many matches.”

After the Frogs garnered the team win, Hertzberg downed Laura Richardson, 6-3, 6-2, for her fifth MWC win of the year in the No. 4 match, while junior Maria Babanova ended the evening with a 2-6, 6-2, 10-6 victory over Michaela Oldani from the No. 6 court.

TCU (7-16, 4-4 MWC) will now begin preparations to defend their MWC tournament title at the 2010 MWC Championships in Las Vegas, Nev., April 28-May 1.

Frogs Fall to New Mexico in MWC Finale

Cirstea improves to 5-1 in league singles

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—TCU suffered a loss in its Mountain West Conference finale at New Mexico, 6-1, Sunday at Linda Estes Tennis Center.

The 63rd-ranked Horned Frogs dropped to 9-11 overall this season while closing their league schedule with a 3-3 record. UNM improved to 7-11 overall and 2-3 in the MWC.

The Lobos opened the afternoon by winning the doubles point prior to taking five of six singles matches. Sophomore Slah Mbarek, who was due to play at the No. 2 singles position, was pulled out of the Frog lineup after doubles due to an injury and did not play singles. The move forced TCU’s Nos. 3 through 6 players to play up a slot, while sophomore Paul Chappell received his first singles assignment since the spring’s opening weekend at No. 6.

Freshman Marius Cirstea posted the squad’s lone singles victory, 7-6, 6-3, over Phil Anderson at the No. 4 position. Cirstea’s win helped him finish the conference season with a team-best 5-1 record.

Only one singles match reached the third set, as UNM’s Jadon Phillips rallied after being shutout in the first set for a 0-6, 7-6, 6-4 win over junior Zach Nichols at the No. 2 spot.

Chappell fought hard through two sets in his first singles action since the end of January before succumbing to Joe Wood, 6-3, 7-6, at the No. 6 position. Other Frogs dropping straight-set affairs included: junior Emanuel Brighiu at No. 1 to Ben Dunbar, 6-3, 6-2; junior Christopher Price at No. 3 to Carl Ho, 6-4, 6-1; and Sören Goritzka at No. 5 to Conor Berg, 6-1, 6-4.

Brighiu and Price, the nation’s No. 67 ranked doubles tandem, posted an 8-6 win at the top position over Phillips and Anderson, 8-6, to run their MWC record to 5-1. The Lobos earned wins at the Nos. 2 and 3 positions to claim the team point. Dunbar and Berg defeated Mbarek and junior Cameron Nash, 8-6, at No. 2, while Wood and Ho posted an 8-2 victory over Chappell and Nichols at No. 3.

“New Mexico played well,” head coach Dave Borelli said. “We didn’t play particularly well, and it’s tough to play here. It’s always a tough atmosphere. It was a good challenge for us, but we just didn’t play as well as we needed. I did think that Marius (Cirstea) looked good today.

“It hurt us not having Slah (Mbarek) to play in singles. I liked our matchups with him in there, but he just wasn’t able to go today. It’s tough to lose, but we need to move on. Our goal is to get ready for conference. I fell pretty confident that we will play well there.”

TCU concludes the regular season next Friday, April 23, when it travels to College Station, Texas, for a 6 p.m. match against Texas A&M. The match previously was scheduled to be played Feb. 26 before being postponed due to inclement weather.
