OKLAHOMA CITY – TCU used a six-run second inning to cruise to a 12-2 run-rule victory over No. 6 Texas Tech in its opening game of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship. A.J. Balta led the team with two hits and four RBIs.

The Rundown
TCU came roaring out of the gates in the second. Johnny Rizer opened the frame with a base hit. Walks to Zach Humphreys and Connor Wanhanen loaded the bases. Adam Oviedo worked a five-pitch walk to make it a 1-0 ballgame. Conner Shepherd followed with a two-run single and A.J. Balta ripped a bases-clearing double to left center for a 6-0 lead.

Texas Tech threatened to climb back in the game after the first two batters were standing in scoring position with nobody out in the second. Nick Lodolo got a big strikeout, followed by a ground out for the first two outs. On a potential wild pitch, Humphreys was able to corral the ball and Lodolo was there for the tag at home to end the inning.

In the fourth, Michael Landestoy singled home two runs for an 8-0 advantage. Balta picked up his fourth RBI with a sacrifice fly to drive in Shepherd in the sixth.

The Red Raiders tallied a pair of runs in the fifth to make it a 9-2 ballgame. The runs scored on a one-out single and a two-out wild pitch.

TCU added three more runs in its final two at-bats to build the 10-run lead, 12-2. Humphreys doubled home Johnny Rizer in the sixth. Wanhanen drew a bases-loaded walk and Oviedo grounded out to drive in the final two runs of the game in the seventh.

Lodolo (7-4) limited the Red Raiders to just two runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out six and walked four. Charles King fanned four and allowed just three hits in two innings of work. Trey Morris came on and recorded the final out of the game.

Tech didn't seem too interested in the game or the tourney. They started a guy last night who had pitched all of 22 innings this season.
