GoFrogs: Soccer Drops Heartbreaker At West Virginia

MORGANTOWN – West Virginia rallied to steal a 2-1 victory over TCU Thursday night in Morgantown at Dick Dlesk Stadium. The Mountaineers struck for two goals 23 seconds apart in the second half. Messiah Bright scored her 10th goal of the campaign.

The Rundown
It was a tale of two halves as the Horned Frogs had the better of the play in the first half and West Virginia the second. Battling wind and rain for much of the night, TCU was able to get on the board first.

In the 31st minute, Yazmeen Ryan spotted an open Messiah Bright on the back post. She worked free of her defender and crossed the ball perfectly for Bright to head it down over the goal line for a 1-0 lead.

The Mountaineers came out on the attack in the second, generating five early corner kicks, but the TCU defense did a good job limiting the shot opportunities. However, West Virginia's first shot on goal turned into the game-tying goal. Lizzie Mayfield's shot deflected off a TCU defender and snuck in under the crossbar in the 77th minute.

Just 23 seconds later, a similar shot from a similar spot by Alina Stahl found the back post for a 2-1 lead with 12 minutes remaining in regulation.

TCU fought back, generating some chances late in the half, but couldn't find the equalizer. Gracie Brian had the best look as her in tight shot snuck behind the WVU keeper only to be cleared out of danger by a WVU defender.

Stat of the Game

Messiah Bright scored her 10th goal of the season. She is the first Horned Frog since Jordan Calhoun (15) in 2008 to score double-digit goals in a season.

Quotes of the Game
Head Coach Eric Bell

On the game:
"The conditions were tough and we played a good team. The first half went exactly how we wanted it to go. We went into the half up a goal. We were in a good spot. In the second half, we struggled with wind, but I still thought we would win. Unfortunately, we gave up two goals in the second half. The conditions were what they were. That's soccer. You have to deal with different types of stuff. Now we have to get ready for Sunday. I think our players will be chomping at the bit at the bit to get back out there."
