PHILADELPHIA - Neidra Covington became the first female student-athlete in TCU history on Friday to win the women's triple jump at the historic Penn Relays.
"The highlight of the day was Neidra Covington winning the women's triple jump with a seasonal-best mark. Anytime you can come into this type of environment and win a championship, it is special," said head coach Darryl Anderson. "It was an outstanding accomplishment for her and we are really pleased with her performance, especially since she is a senior. This really sets her up well for the rest of the year. We did a good job in the sprint medley getting fourth overall, while also qualifying in both relays, which is good. Overall, it was a pretty productive day for us. We'll get some rest tonight and then come back tomorrow and do it all over again."
Covington soared 43 feet, 4 ½ inches to claim championship accolades at Franklin Field in front of 38,904 spectators. By winning the women's triple jump, Covington not only became the first female in TCU history to win the women's triple jump in Philadelphia, but also became only the second student-athlete ever at TCU to win a triple jump title at the Penn Relays. Former Horned Frog great Jonathan Jackson won the men's triple jump title in 2008. Convington's seasonal-best mark is currently No. 2 in the Mountain West Conference and No. 6 in the NCAA this spring.
"This feels really good," said Covington. "I was a little sore out there today, but I was able to battle through it and get the win. I am really excited."
Later in the day, the men's 4x100 quartet of Skye Dawson, Charles Silmon, Mychal Dungey and Mark Barnes qualified for Saturday's Championship of America final by clocking a time of 40.24 seconds. The unit finished second in heat No. 4 and fourth overall to advance. TCU, who is currently ranked in the top 10 in the world standings, will look to capture its 10th 4x100 relay title at Penn on Saturday.
In the men's 4x400, Clint Renfro, Clemore Henry, Dungey and Dell Guy, who just missed advancing to Saturday's Championship of America final, recorded a seasonal-best time of 3:09.41 to finish in ninth-place and qualify for the men's 4x400 college final on Saturday. The quartet's time is currently No. 1 in the conference this spring.
Renfro opened the day crossing the finish line in third-place in heat No. 3 to place ninth overall with a seasonal-best time of 52.41 seconds in the finals of the college men's 400-meter hurdles. Fellow junior Jordan Pitts followed in 14th-place at Franklin Field on Friday morning. Renfro's time is currently No. 5 in the Mountain West Conference this spring.
In the finals of the sprint medley, the Purple and White clocked a time of 3:20.31 to finish fourth overall. The quartet's time is the eighth-fastest time posted in program history.
Other highlights in Philadelphia included, former Frog great Bill Collins helping Houston Elite TC place second in the masters 50 and older division of the 4x400.
TCU will close action tomorrow in Philadelphia. The Frogs will begin competition on Saturday with the finals of the men's 4x100 at 12:25 p.m. CT.
