Why the stakes are so high for TCU’s rematch at Texas Tech

After going 2-0 in league play last week, TCU will start the week with a massive game against Big 12 rival Texas Tech at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

The game has significance on numerous levels. The Horned Frogs are going for the season sweep of the Red Raiders. TCU pulled away in an impressive 85-78 win at Schollmaier Arena on Jan. 30 when Texas Tech was viewed as a top-15 team.

Another victory would secure bragging rights, but more importantly than that this game feels like a elimination game if TCU or Texas Tech wants to stay alive for the regular-season league title.

A win in this game would be huge for us, but a loss wouldn't.

The inverse may be true for Tech, though even if they fall to 7-6 with a loss tonight they're not exactly threatening to miss the tournament. They have road games left at UCF, WVU, and Okle State, plus home games with Texas and Baylor. They should be able to win three of those five and make the field of 68. Neither of these teams is in the conference championship race, and barring a spectacular collapse down the home stretch neither is in danger of missing the tournament.

Geez Mr. Jphnson, is every Big 12 game MASSIVE?

or

Maybe it’s just BIG 12 Basketbal?
Definitely true, but this one does have some added significance in terms of tourney seeding. Since this is the first (and only) year with 14 teams, it’s worth emphasizing the point that the 4 seed gets two byes and a spot in the quarterfinals. Having the tie breaker over Tech would greatly increase the chances of ending up the 4 seed. We’d have essentially a 2 game head to head lead on Tech and Kansas has a wicked tough ending to the schedule.

When both teams are playing at their best, TCU is the better team. Depends on what TCU team shows up at Tech, but if Washington is out for Tech that's a big boost for the Frogs.
Other than the ISU game, the Frogs have really played well on the road in the Big 12. The games at Cincinnati and Kansas should have been wins but the refs got in the way.

This is a very big game. KF laid it out really well and I can’t see where anyone wouldn’t think that this is a very important game.

They said the same thing about the game at KSU. How many of these damned elimination games do we have to play? The NCAA tournament only has 6.
