DMN: Quarterback’s arrest is latest blow to Christian TCU’s image

The DWI arrest Thursday of Texas Christian University quarterback Casey Pachall is the year’s latest example of the Fort Worth college publicly struggling to live up to the moral code spelled out in its name.

TCU is the largest university affiliated with Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). But since February, it’s received more attention for drug dealing and use among football players, its spot on Playboy’s top party school list and now the DWI arrest of a star athlete.

The Thursday morning bust of football quarterback Casey Pachall, who had previously admitted to drug use, adds to the troubled atmosphere. His indefinite suspension from the team comes two days before TCU’s Big 12 home opener against Iowa State University.

Chauncey Franks, a Fellowship of Christian Athletes representative for the Fort Worth area, said he wasn’t comfortable talking specifically about the football team’s troubles because of his TCU ties. But he would say the university shouldn’t be held to a different standard just because of its religious affiliation.

“On any college campus in America, it’s just a reflection of our culture,” he said. “They bring past experiences, past hurts, past struggles to college campuses. A name of a university does not define the character of the students there.” ...

Don't understand the DMN here. TCU has not been a "Christian school" in the same way Bob Jones U. is for about 100 years at least. I didn't see any articles on SMU's Christian image problems with articles about drug useage and rape began to show up in the paper. There's not a dime's worth of differene between students at TCU, SMU and Baylor and not much more than a dime between students at those religiously affiliated schools and UT, Tech, etc.

The difference is that TCU has won the Rose Bowl and was recently featured in Sports Illustrated as one of the cleanest programs in the nation. Most people outside of Texas consider TCU a "Christian school" and that won't change.

With that said the DMN can stick it.

Was the christian image of SMU hurt when it was revealed that Craig James didn't kill 5 hookers at SMU?

How about when some of its current football players got pistol whipped by some hookers this summer?

Was the Christian image of Baylor hurt when their basketball coach tried to cover up the circumstances surrounding the murder of one of his players by another one of his players? Was the Christian image of Baylor hurt when their players passed out smoking pot in the Taco Bell drive through? Was the Christian image of SMU hurt when they had the worst infractions and punishment in NCAA history?

DID NOT READ when I saw Headline!!!!

That's as far as I got.

I hate the absurd "Christian" straw man. It's insulting that you're somehow not a Christian if you aren't perfect.

TCU fails to live up to Christian moral code, so if the DUI was at Texas would that fail to live up to the Texan code? The secular humanist's code?

Aren't we past the point of being surprised when the media spins something to suit their interests. Has political coverage not proven this over and over and over (from BOTH sides)??????

Agreed. That said, you don't have to be surprised to be agitated by this type of article.

I don't think it really has an effect in the long run, but having the word 'Christian' in TCU's name probably makes it an easier target in these kinds of situations than a religiously affiliated Baylor or even Southern Methodist University.
