The basketball union did something a few years that sure helped the players. Every team HAS to spend a certain amount on payroll. If the teams do not sign enough free agents, they must rework existing contracts.

Sports salaries are getting out of control but the NBA is absolutely insane.
Roster size is obviously a huge factor there. If NFL teams were only paying 15 guys with the same revenue then they'd be making 2X - 3X what the NBA players are.

The NBA also doesn't have much of a "middle class" these days. The top players are getting huge paydays and soaking up an overwhelming majority of the salary pool while most other guys are getting relatively small contracts.

Bad teams are now stacking draft picks by storing high money bad contracts from other teams to meet these thresholds.

Yes. Bad expiring contracts are now one of the most in demand assets in the NBA.
Sign a guy that you don’t really want to a huge contract and immediately try and get of them. I don’t follow it all that closely to know all the details but seems like that goes on quite a bit.
