Had two Auburn alums on a Zoom call this morning. Did not hear anything about Freeze but they definitely want to export Malzahn.
yes, many Auburn fans are not happy and want off the Gus Bus. Problem: Due to the 2017 extension and the reality that the covid shutdowns impacted a lot budget wise, it will be hard to raise the money to buy him out and get a coach to compete. As a person who has been an Auburn fan since a kid, I can tell you that door revolves a lot. The Bowden exit was pure insanity, and the same people who caused that nightmare had a major hand in causing the Tuberville exit. (Pushing Tuberville out was a mistake. Same with Chiz. Bowden was a mixed bag, but the problems he had that brought on his exit were rooted to the same person that caused issues for Tuberville - Bobby Lowder. When a trustee/booster is as well known among your fanbase as the head coach is, you can guarantee there will be trouble.)
With Gus, as it was with Tuberville, it was not so much about beating/losing to Bama. Just a championship hunger that clouds some thinking. (Keep in mind Tuberville took the Tigers to an undefeated season.)
Gus was a great O-coordinator, when their was a headcoach to keep him in check to play complimentary football. The Springdale mom's club caused issues at Arkansas. Then they caused issues at Auburn during his first stop and Chiz got fired just a few years removed from a National Title. When Gus did not take the Arkansas gig a few years back, it was reality that he was not going anywhere for a while. Chiz was able to keep him in check and they got a Nat. Title. His race the boards no matter what cost him in the title game against FSU.
He beat Bama last year. That bought him another. As for Hugh Freeze, I have never heard Auburn fans talk about hiring him. Depending on what report you look at, Freeze had his downfall then owned up to it and has tried to make right OR Freeze had his downfall and only owned up indirectly as much as he needed to get back to coaching at the earliest possible chance he could while still not face NCAA sanction. One would hope it is the former. But, like Petrino ( not near as much as with Briles), a Freeze hire makes folks nervous. Not just because of the phonegate issue, but because of the infranctions for recruiting that he tried bogusly pin on Houston Nutt.
For now, I would suspect Gus is ok at Auburn. At least until the Iron Bowl.
