NEWPORT, R.I. - When the football families of the Big East Conference assembled to begin competition back in 1991, it was Miami that ruled the roost.

"This league is a lot different than it was back then," related Paul Pasqualoni, the new head football coach at the University of Connecticut.

"Back then, I don't know how realistic it was for teams (other than Miami) to win the conference," said Pasqualoni. "Now, it's a league of good teams - there are no bad teams in this league."

With the Big East football coaches assembled in The City by the Sea for their annual meeting, the Mountaineers of West Virginia were the consensus preseason pick to finish first, having won or shared the Big East title in five of the last eight years. Pittsburgh and South Florida were the 2-3 picks with UConn coming in at No. 6 among the eight football-playing member schools. ...
