The More You Know - TCU MBB

I was reading the Go Frogs MBB pregame post and some statistics really stood out to me about the team, emphasis mine.

- TCU's newcomers includes six transfers and four freshmen. Two additional players are redshirt freshmen.
- TCU is the only team in the Big 12 with five freshmen averaging 7.0 minutes or more. No other team has four.
- Only three teams nationally have more than five freshmen averaging at least 7.0 minutes or more.
- In two of the last four games, over half of TCU's scoring has come from freshmen.

- Vasean Allette is averaging 11.7 points and 13.2 in Big 12 games, which ranks 20th.
- Allette is averaging 5.8 assists over the last four games.
- Freshman David Punch is one of five freshmen in the Big 12 averaging at least 5.0 (6.0) points and 4.0 (4.2) rebounds.

In the last game against OSU:
- The Frogs got 55 percent of its scoring from freshmen.
- Freshmen Malick Diallo (10) and Micah Robinson (13) each had season highs in points.

- TCU ranks third in the Big 12 and 46th nationally in 3-point defense, allowing 30.9 percent from beyond-the-arc.
- TCU ranks 35th in defensive efficiency at 97.7 according to KenPom. TCU finished 44th last season.
- The Frogs have committed less than 10 turnovers six times in Big 12 play.

- Last season, TCU finished the season in the NCAA Tournament for a program-best, third-straight season.
- Dixon is one of just nine active head coaches who have made at least 15 appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
- Dixon is one of 20 active D1 head coaches that has at least 500 career wins at a D1 program.

I would be the first to agree that they can be head slappingly frustrating to watch at times, but there’s a core of talented players that I bet in three years we are going to be really happy with if we can keep them together. My best guess is the team this year will at least make the CBI, and is a stretch for the NIT as we probably would need at least four or more wins for that. I know, big whup, but more playing time is important for their growth.

If you care to comment, what‘s your analysis?

TCU hasn't been easy to watch, but the Frogs aren't terrible. The Frogs are 89th in KenPom and haven't lost to a team worse than that. They've been terrible away from home, but their one road/neutral win was over a top-25 team. They are one game below .500 in a conference where they've never had a winning record (and which has five top-13 teams). They play tough defense (34th).

@Horned Toad's analysis is on point. Jamie has turned to developing younger talent--which could help them develop, and which could convince them to stay out of the portal. Seems wise. And the young guys are responding well.

Hard to look too far down the road, though. How well will the young guys develop? How much more competitive will the Frogs be with them in a couple of years? How much impact will they have if new talent pushes them down the rotation? But it's the right move now to give those guys a shot.

I think Punch has a bright future. Understandably as a true freshman seems a little tentative, positioning himself well but maybe trying to avoid mistakes. He’ll keep progressing.

Punch played fairly well early on in the season but about the Houston game he got tentative on taking a shot and started passing when he should have put it up. I hope he can get his confidence back. I think he’ll be a keeper. Dialo has been one of the biggest surprises to me. He’s starting to come on. He needs to put on some weight in the offseason. If we can keep Udeh, I think he’s going to have a monster season next year.

I like all the young guys. We just need to find a purer scorer and pure shooter to complement them, and I think we could be really good. They actually play winning basketball when we’re not playing one of the elite teams.

Totally agree with your analysis. This team shows more promise than most realize. Unfortunately the statement you make "...if we can keep them together.." is likely the key to more successful seasons. It's very difficult to get a team into the top echelon of college basketball with turn over the likes of which the Frogs have seen. I was watching ESPN before the TCU - Az State game started last night at 7, Syracuse was playing and our former player, Eddie Lampkin Jr was playing. He seemed to have developed into quite a player. Quickness, aggressiveness, and tight defense and rebounding technique was much better than what we saw while he was a Frog. Other former Frogs have transferred and been significant contributors to other programs....such is the NCAA sports world now. Getting players to come to Fort Worth and keeping them long enough to develop them are two different issues.
Dixon's current rotations especially with Posey, Punch, Robinson and Dialo gives TCU depth better than I remember in years. (I've been around long enough to recall Coco Villarreal as a 6th man!) I am probably alone in thinking that missing the NCAA trip this year and making the NIT instead would likely result in them playing more games, get more experience and be of benefit that would pay-off in future seasons. Would you all want to have a good chance to go deep in the NIT, or play a 2-3 seed in the first round of the NCAA tourney?
If Coach Dixon can get them to play better with a lead (blew 12 and 13 point leads in last 2 games) they certainly can get enough wins to keep playing after the Big XII tournament ends. OH, yes, free throw percentage seems to have improved recently and let's hope that continues.

It's possible, but unlikely, that this team can still play its way into the tourney. We'd be a 10/11/12/playin team though. Despite giving up big leads, they are something like 8-1 this year in games of 5 points or less. If we can keep the young talent, and add a shooter and another 4/5, we could be darn good next year.

Assuming Collins returns, we'll have a point. RJ Jones is redshirting and just had surgery. Posey has been getting better and better, Robinson is up and down but contributes as a freshman. Diallo has reached the point where I think he is almost as effective as Udeh (who has not improved much and still makes far too many dumb fouls). Even Manning was showing signs before his injury. You add in Punch and Allette and you have a 7 man rotation plus Manning who could still develop.

I have not followed enough to know what freshman we have coming in, or what Ashton Simmons and Adam Stewart (6'10", is he a walk on?) could give us.

If we keep everyone, we lose 4 + a walk on, and the only one I think we will really miss will be Reynolds.

Good analysis! Agree with just about all of it... Gotta keep some guys though and that is tough these days... Posey's results yesterday were awesome... These guys are getting better and have really only taken their lumps a few times this year from really good teams (mostly on the road)...to the question about tourneys, it's tough.... Those NIT runs really improved us and vaulted them into the big dance... I'm thinking that would be best for this young team.... But they still have an outside chance... Will be interesting to see down the stretch.

This team is playing much better the last few outs which is all anyone can ask. Diallo has been the biggest surprise for me and the improvement of Posey has given us hope that he will continue to be a major contributor going forward. I’m really excited to see what Simmons has to offer because he’s the type of point guard that Jamie likes.

Let’s hope that NIL won’t be a problem and we can keep these young players. Edwards is one of the best signees we’ve ever had and Edmonds is a different type of player than we’ve recruited in the JD era. We could use a couple of guys that can put the ball in the basket.

Making the NCAA tourney is a stretch, but if we could find our way there I always prefer it to playing for 69th place (NIT). But the NIT is better than nuthin as the guys keep developing.

After last night’s big win over #9 Tech, has anyone’s analysis changed? Is the future looking bright and cupboard looking like it might be stocked more than we thought it was? Two transfer players, Reynolds and White, were the keys to that victory and several freshmen and sophomores continue to contribute.

Still thinking this is an NIT team, but next year is looking like a tourney team.

Some of those early season loses will likely be held against us, wrongly IMHO.

Yeah, I think it's just too late unless we go undefeated the rest of the way and do something stupid like make the finals in the conference tourney.
