The Charleston Gazette: A year of QB struggles in Big 12

By Dave Hickman

MORGANTOWN - Dana Holgorsen has a certain degree of empathy for the coaches in the Big 12 going through quarterback struggles this fall.

It's not something to which he could have related throughout most of his coaching career. Until this season, Holgorsen had never been a head coach or a coordinator with a team that had to deal with multiple quarterbacks. He'd never lost one to injury, even for so much as a single game.

Now, not only is he going through it, but so is almost everyone else in the league, it seems.

"It just kind of went into a cycle,'' Holgorsen said. "Everybody was playing with very experienced quarterbacks last year that remained healthy. And this year it seems like everybody is kind of juggling them, one, to try to find answers and, two, to try to keep them healthy. Texas Tech's dealing with it, we're dealing with it, TCU's dealing with it, Texas has dealt with it, Kansas State has dealt with it.

"Until guys get established and healthy, that's just the reality of college football.'' ...

Tech found 2 QB's, one a true freshman.  Kansas State found a young, great one.  Baylor found one.  Ags found a Heisman guy.  Even SMU found one.  OU found one.  Okie State finds many.

TCU is 110th in total offense, someone reported.

In his last 3 games Mayfield has 1 TD and 5 INTs. Too early to say he is any good.

I assume you're talking about Sams? In his only 2 starts he has 2 TDs and 4 INTs. He threw 7 times against Baylor. He is a great runner, bad passer. Sound familiar?

Gilbert struggled for years before finally showing up as a senior, and TCU has embarrassed him both years we've played him: 3 TDs and 9 INTs in 2 games.

OSU found 3 last year, but one transferred, Chelf has hardly played this year, and Walsh hasn't progressed as much as they'd hope.

Bell played well the start the year but very poorly against UT.

Petty is a redshirt junior and has played great, and Manziel is one of nation's best.

To me it's looking like most teams in our region are looking for better QB play or had to struggle through some growing pains before finding it. Also keep in mind that we have one of the best QBs in the nation, but he popped a curb after a few beers on a weeknight near a DUI checkpoint.

Wait for this entire year to play out and every team to play each other before you declare all the other schools to have found their QBs of the present and future.
