Because that would be dumb. I don't think 64 is perfect but it allows all conference champs a shot. Another weekend isn't needed; conference tournaments are that de facto additional chance for everyone. Even though only 16 teams have a shot at winning it all, it was fun and memorable to watch Loyola go to the Final Four. I remember that more than I remember who won that year - that kind of thing is fun and interesting for ALL fans (and casual observers, for that matter).I guess I’d ask, why not add another weekend and make it a 256 team field if what you say is true? Wouldn’t that be just more of the only thing anyone cares about in college basketball?
Because college football is a 12 game season, and with a lot fewer games (and teams), the field thins quickly and you can watch truly important games along the way.Why do you say it would be different in college football? Was that a typo? I think the “greatest regular season in sports”, which is how college football was described, has definitely taken a hit with the playoff expansion.
I think you're agreeing with me there - the size of the tournament field in football would have an impact on regular season viewing (too big, less intrigue for big games). It doesn't for basketball. I'm not going to make a point to watch Purdue-Maryland in January because a tournament spot might be on the line. Who cares?
