Frogs defense plays stellar, holding UCF to mostly field goals, but they can't overcome inconsistency of the offense. Hoover is forced into a lot of 3rd and longs because Cook continues his bad habit of not hitting the hole and trying to outrun people to the edge, which worked against inferior talent like Stanford and LIU. It does NOT work against UCF. Either he is pulled or figures it out way too late and the offense makes a surge, but Briles panics and calls plays forcing Williams the ball and late desperation drives lead to 3 and outs, and a turnover on TCU's last drive. Offense is so frustratingly inconsistent that Jug proceeds to pour tequila that he snuck in under his kilt into his beers and forgets he created a Fire Dykes thread and then proceeds to create another one, where people call him an idiot and to stick to the Pick Em thread and talking about pooping up Waco.
Good news is there's already a fire Briles thread you can just hop on as needed.

Not sure why you’re so down on Cook. He still has less than 50 total carries of CFB experience. He has 0 fumbles and 0 carries for negative yards.
Improved week to week averaging 4.5 ypc with 4 tds.
Averaging 4.5 ypc with a completely horrible run blocking IOL is not that easy. He seems to be improving, and is by far our most effective runner. Cam should get 20 carries in this game. If he can get anywhere close to 100 yards, that’s pretty good. Hopefully the other backs can get 50+
The rest of it, you may have a point. TCU has 13 penalties for 165 yards in just 2 games against very mediocre competition . A bunch of them are holding and false starts. If we continue with these drive killers, we’ll lose.

We have 1 offensive holding and zero false start penalties so far this year.

I think Cook seems promising. He needs more patience and discipline, and has to stop trying to bounce to the outside. I'm just worried that a combination of his inexperience, the line's mediocre-to-poor run blocking, and our OC's tendencies will put us too far behind the chains too often to win the battle on TOP. I think TOP will be a major factor in the outcome of this game. I think Cam Cook could be the kind of RB to help a team control the clock, but at this moment, and in this squad with this scheme, he won't be.

I believe that’s incorrect.
Check HFB, on JC’s post LIU podcast at 00:03:10.
”OL - 3 out of 4 penalties were holding. On one, a Jeremy Payne TD was called back.” …..and they said it again at 00:05:28

Went back through both games. I missed 1 holding penalty the first time around. We have a total of 2 holding penalties on offense, one on Taylor-Whitfield on the second play of the 3rd quarter against LIU and the other against Brockermeyer with 11:44 left in the game (That’s the one where Payne’s TD was called back. Incidentally, we scored TDs on both drives). We got called for a hold on defense and another on a punt return (but that was against Stanford). No false starts in either game. Not sure why they think we had 3 holding calls against LIU. We did have a 3rd penalty against an O lineman in that game, but that was an unsportsmanlike conduct foul with zeroes on the clock.

….so 1 of the 3 calls was unsportsmanlike conduct, instead of holding.
There was another major 15 yd. penalty on IOL in the Stanford game.

I tend to agree, except that they ran for 400/ypg against the useless opponents they played, whereas we threw for 300+ypg, struggled to run between the tackles and had quite a poor third down conversion rate on offense. Just because you can run over rubbish teams doesn't mean you can't run over good ones, but if you can't run over rubbish ones it almost certainly does mean that you can run over good ones. If we're in 3rd and 4 situations and need to extend drives, we're going to be looking to hit JPR on a slant in traffic, or maybe we'll try to fake that look and se if we can hit Savion Williams deep and really burn them. We're just built on to try such a lower percentage strategy then UCF is. That doesn't mean we can't win, but it makes it harder to win, and nearly impossible to win them all.

[That said, UCF fan pessimists might look at Ted Roofe about how I tend to look at Johnny Tape-fingers. His defenses are often a liability.]

Most of UCF's rushing yardage is actually not between the tackles either. They run most of their stuff outside. Sweep type stuff. This gives me both hope and trepidation at the same time. If our lb's can get them to the sidelines, we might have a chance. If our lb's are slow or get blocked, it will be a long night. I'm trepidatious because I don't know if we still have that kind of speed at lb to get it done. The kind kind of lb speed we had under GP is what we need.

One thing for certain, we'll know a little bit more about who we are after this game as opposed to the first 2 cream puffs we played. UCF is the most talented of our first 3 opponents. We might not know a lot more, but a little bit more.

We'll see. Lets get it on...

UCF has significantly more talent than SMU, so they are the most talented of our first 4-5 or 6 games…
