Sanna with the low round of the week in the Netherlands, a bogey-free 65 that was matched by Stephanie Kyriacou. Those two are tied at -13 going into the final round; they are 4 shots clear of third place and 7 shots clear of the rest of the field.

Sanna Nuutinen finishes runner-up at the LET tourney in the Netherlands. She had battled back from 3 shots down to regain the lead, but a two-shot swing on the 17th leaves her without a trophy. On a positive note, she moves to the top of the LET Order of Merit.

Sanna's countrywoman, Matilda Castren, is T2 at the LPGA Volunteers of America Classic at The Colony after having won a couple of weeks ago. Finland suddenly looks to have a surprisingly strong Olympic women's golf team.

Also at the VOA, Angela Stanford shoots a bogey-free 65 to sit T5 with a round to play. If she finishes 8th or better, she will earn enough points to jump back into the top 8 in the U.S. Solheim Cup standings with 6 events to go (top 7 auto qualify). Angela is a real threat to qualify to play on the team that she will help coach at Inverness in September.

Three Frogs took part in a 36-hole U.S. Amateur qualifier at Tempest G.C. in Gladewater last Wednesday. Out of a field of 83, Trevor Brown finished solo 6th at -3. A strong showing, but not quite good enough to earn one of the 2 qualifying slots on offer. Colton Cavender finished T12 at +1. Brandon Massey shot +6.

Brown was paired with Tony Romo and beat him by 7 shots in the morning round; Romo dropped out rather than play the second 18.

My BIL will be in the final grouping tomorrow at the Irish Open! Looking for his first euro tour win. Also the top three players not already qualified (he’s not) receive entry into the British Open. Fingers crossed!
Update: he played okay but not well enough to catch the leader. It’s a third place finish BUT it comes with an entry into the British Open! Also 28 owgr points IIRC and $180k. Not a bad little Sunday.

Congrats to Johannes for earning a spot in the Open! Looked like he had momentum with this big putt to tie for the lead on 14, but the winner made a couple more birdies late.

Trinity King did not qualify for the match-play portion of the championship flight at the Texas Women's Am, so she was slotted into the First Flight with 7 other low-handicap players. She has since won two matches, including a 20-hole victory today over Tulane soph Hannah Liu, to advance to the final. She will play University of North Texas's Patricia Sinolungan tomorrow.

Angela Stanford needs a pair of top-5 finishes in the next six weeks (or a win) to make the U.S. Solheim Cup team.

She is not in the field this week at the Marathon LPGA Classic outside Toledo. Maybe she's just taking a break, but with this week's tournament close to Inverness, which hosts the Solheim Cup later this year, it is likely that her assistant captain duties have her on site (and are given priority over playing). If so, too bad, because Highland Meadows is a course she has played consistently well, posting 3 top-10 finishes since 2015.

Possible that she's not pushing to make the team, in order to be a good soldier and prepare to get a captain's nod in upcoming years. If Stanford doesn't qualify, it will be interesting to see if Pat Hurst will use one of her 3 captain's picks on her. She's likely to be one of the three-highest-ranked players on the board, and she'll have by far the most Solheim experience...but her Solheim record is pretty bad.

Currently set to auto-qualify are Korda, Korda, Thompson, Kang, Khang, Kupcho, Ernst, Ewing, Salas. Here are the top U.S. players currently not among those set to auto-qualify:
  • Marina Alex
  • Brittany Altomare
  • Mina Harigae
  • Stacy Lewis
  • Yealimi Noh
  • Amy Olson
  • Angela Stanford
  • Angel Yin
Which 3 would you pick?

And SnoSki's BIL Johannes Veerman with another top 10 at the Scottish Open. His T8 was slotted between Rahm and Xander, tired with JT He's on quite a roll heading into the (British) Open.

Chris Berzina played well in the state am earlier this summer. Today he's at Westwood GC in Houston to qualify for the U.S. Am next month at Oakmont. Scores will be posted here: https://www.golfgenius.com/pages/3065542

Edit: Top 3 qualify out of a field of roughly 70. Chris shot a 2-under 70 in the morning round, which is currently T5 with all but one morning scores posted. He'll have a shot with a good afternoon round.

Berzina posts a second-round 69 for a -5 total. He was one of the first groups out, so lots of scores still to be posted--but he'll have a chance to qualify.

Edit: Chris qualifies for the U.S. Amateur! His 69 was the low score for Round 2 and his 139 total was good for a T2 finish and a ticket to Oakmont. Congrats to Chris!

Just got off the phone with him. Really cool to see a kid you’ve had a hand in coaching since he was 7 do this. He had a good summer last year, a great summer this year. Maybe he can crack the lineup this year

Seems like he's found something in terms of scoring consistency and avoiding big numbers on tough layouts. Great to see. Did he give any insight into the setup, his course management or mental game?

He finally listened to Franklin and tweaked his pivot. Was something I told him back in octoberish but I’m like big brother and he won’t listen to me (at that point he was also working with Dana). It’s just got the flight to be more consistent so he isn’t curving it both ways as much. I think biggest thing is not feeling like if you hit a bad shot you are going to get benched. Frees you up to play golf.
