If you told a 12-year-old Ben Banogu that he’d one day be named Big 12 preseason Defensive Player of the Year, good luck getting him to believe it for a split second.
His final line at the end of the 2017 campaign: 49 total tackles, 16.5 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks and 7 quarterback hurries. It didn’t take much deliberation on the Big 12’s end to name Banogu the league’s defensive newcomer of the year.
Except that was never the plan for the 249-pound lineman who emerged out of Prosper High School in spring 2014 — injury-ridden and just a two-star recruit.
