The knee jerk reactions on this are ridiculous. This will still happen. The SEC press release practically says as much. It just won't happen this week.

I like that the LHN still has no provider in Texas.

Oh, and yeah. This will still happen. Now is the time for the BigEast to make some headway in that TV contract so that the member schools are satisfied with their position.

According to the SEC-centric sites I'm reading [Clay Travis, the SBN blog for SEC coverage, etc.] the SEC is really concerned not to be seen as the instigator here.

Which was one of the issues last year...the SEC was waiting for the Pac 16 move to go down and for the Big 12 to start crumbling. Never happened. At this point, there's no way for the SEC to NOT be seen as an instigator unless they wait for someone else to leave the Big 12.

I still contend this is ESPN's doing. Without more cash from ESPN no move happens. But an SEC Network could change that. Because ESPN has the SEC locked in for 13 years, they are in a position of strength.

Great read into the current situation:

"Yep, ESPN's television deals have so monopolized college athletics that its a major road bump in any conference realignment."

Ding, ding, ding. We have a winner.

There is way more that can go wrong for the aggies than right in this deal. If any organization can screw the pooch it's the ags.

Welcome to 2011. College football has changed since Arkansas went to the SEC.

Yes, but no. The SEC poaching ARKY is what set it in all in motion. Roy Kramer, then commish of SEC, wanted a 12 team conference with a championship game and thus Arky was one of 3 new invitees. Roy Kramer also the architect of the BCS, had that in place in few years after he initiated the bowl coalition for a couple of years. The modern 12 team conference and championship game with the BCS was Kramer's brainchild and poaching Arky from the SWC was the first step in the plan. 2 years after Arky was gone SWC disbanded and the formation of Big 12 happened.

While a lot has changed, but ARky leaving was the initial move and start of the conferences that are in the club and the BCS, while the others were now on the outside looking in.

In fairness, the superconference was originally the brainchild of Fred Jacoby, former SWC commish. He tried unsuccessfully to put together a big 8 / SWC merger that would host a championship game. He had a TV deal in the works that would have set a new standard. He couldn't get full support, ended up losing his job and then the B12 ended up happening years later. The story went that Texas, et al liked the idea but did not want to share money with TCU, Houston, Rice, SMU, etc. So they re-shaped his plan.

Is there still a good chance A&M will be invited later in the season after all these issues are taken care of? I hope the Big East can take Missouri and KSU.
