San Diego Union-Tribune: TCU's McCoy turns kickoffs into statements

When Greg McCoy left Woodrow Wilson High School in the Lakewood-East Dallas area, he knew the very best he could be is the third-best player to ever play there.

That’s what happens when a school turns out two Heisman Trophy winners in quarterback Davey O’Brien (1938, TCU) and wide receiver Tim Brown (1987, Notre Dame).

McCoy never had a chance at the Heisman at Texas Christian University because he played cornerback and returned punts. But what a punt returner, defender and student-athlete he became in reaching All-American status this year.

He will leave TCU as an all-conference returner and Mountain West Conference Special Teams Player of the Year. McCoy, who was a graduate student this season and was voted the conference’s best athlete by The Sporting News, led the conference in punt return average at 31.6 yards per return and was fourth in the nation. In his last game of the regular season McCoy returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown against UNLV. It was his second return for a touchdown on the season, with his other going for 94 yards. ...
