Veteran Kansas State coach Bill Snyder remembers when the Big 12 was the future of college football.

Snyder was on the sidelines for KSU's 21-14 victory over Texas Tech on Aug. 31, 1996, in the first game in the conference's history. The marriage between four Southwest Conference expatriates and the Big Eight was expected to revolutionize college football.

Barely 15 years later, that game is little more than a fleeting memory for Snyder and others who were there for the Big 12's debut.

Today, the conference's once-pristine national reputation is in tatters as such schools as Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech are contemplating departures. Texas A&M already has been accepted by the Southeastern Conference, and Nebraska and Colorado bolted for other conferences after last season. ...
