With 3 of 5 shooters having competed, Frogs have the lead in today's smallbore preliminaries. Finals are this p.m. at 1:40 Central.

Update: Frogs were overtaken by WVU late--went from 7 up to 6 down, mostly on an excellent showing by WVU's Mary Tucker. Not sure how the prelim scores impact the finals.

So, the morning relay was the decider on the team competition for smallbore. The Frogs can win the overall natty if they beat WVU by 7+ (and others by 1+) in air rifle tomorrow.

The afternoon finals was individual competition, in which Katie Zaun placed second and Stephanie Grundsøe third. Congrats to those young ladies.

With 2 shooters left, the aggregate score across both events is very tight.

I didn't realize until looking at the online scoring that rifle is scored almost identically to golf: 5-count-4 (poorest score discarded).

TCU appears to front-load its lineup; WVU back-loads. Mary Tucker was the top shooter yesterday and has yet to shoot for the Mountaineers. But air rifle also has higher across-the-board scores than smallbore, so it's not as easy to make up a deficit.
