TCU safety Jamel Johnson withdraws from NCAA transfer portal

Story by Griffin McVeigh

According to On3’s Pete Nakos, TCU safety Jamel Johnson has withdrawn from the NCAA transfer portal. A few big-time programs were circling for Johnson but he decided against leaving Funky Town. Huge news for the Horned Frogs as one of the program’s best defensive players will return for the 2025 season.

Johnson played in all 12 games this season, recording 71 tackles, 2.0 tackles for a loss, three pass breakups, and a forced fumble. This was as a true sophomore, having two more years of eligibility. Leaving for the NFL after three seasons is certainly a possibility too.

This seems really big; great news. I was as critical as anyone of this staff when the team looked unready and ill-disciplined early in the season, so credit where it's due: Sonny & Co. seem pretty good at convincing contributors to stick around. We've lost a few, certainly, but we're not seeing massive attrition rates in the portal compared to a lot of programs.

Of course, $$. However, one thing is for sure: Jamel has set a course in the right direction that will last for several years. Most likely, he won't "fully" understand my statement for several months, but his course is now mapped, and it is good for a young man to understand that you have to set a course and stick to it!

Was I supposed to type something here?
He was a highly rated recruit, but has 0 career sacks and 0 career interceptions. He also got benched late in the season in favor of Cam Smith and our defense got better. It is time for him to step up. If he got more $, can’t say it has actually been earned.
This.

If they did indeed open up the wallet to keep a kid who isn't a starter, and may be a discipline problem...

Just a guess. Sometimes being benched causes problems. It is evident they tried to keep him around, so they feel that he has potential and is an asset.
