Sonny Dykes on TCU’s offensive line: ‘Love the competition we have’

After a disappointing season in 2023, failing to follow up on a highly successful 2022 campaign, TCU and head coach Sonny Dykes are eying a return to form in 2024. And Dykes is confident in one key group for the planned rebound for the Horned Frogs.

Speaking at Big 12 Media Days, Dykes raved about the depth and the competition of the TCU offensive line room. With fall camp closing in, Dykes is excited to have competition at all five spots.

“Love the competition we have in that room. I think that’s been the biggest thing that, to me, has improved us,” Dykes said. “We’ve got some young players that have developed and now starting to reach their potential. We’ve got a carryover, Mike Nichols, who we think has a chance to be a really good — one of the better offensive linemen in the Big 12. And we have competition at every spot. That’s what I love. I love the fact that those guys know they have to show up every day, roll their sleeves up, they’ve got to go to work. It’s a tough-minded group, it’s a physical group. Just love their approach.”

I’m really happy with the transfers that HCSD was able to bring in. Guys like Carson Bruno and Cade Bennett are two IOL that made the all-conference list last season that should immediately make an impact. If Bless Harris can stay healthy, the sky is the limit with him. And landing the younger Brockermeyer brother is a huge and much needed get at center. And we of course already know how good Nichols is.

I think this starting 5 is without a doubt an upgrade over last season. My only concern is overall depth. Guys like Deery, Taylor-Whitfield, and Strickland will be really solid contributors as well, but we really need a few more guys to step up.

Translation: We don’t have anybody separating themselves from the pack. No clear starters. Likely not because everybody on the roster is a total stud.

Dykes who has some height, looks dwarfed by the boys behind him. Remember when a good OL averaged 6'1"-2". Nowadays.....6'7-8". No wonder when looking at illustrations of prehistoric men were 4'4" possibly 5" inches. Do you think 20 years from now,, 6'11 might be average.?

I think the consensus is that it's more dependent on nutrition than genetics. There are a lot of 6 foot Asian American men with 5'5" parents. But most of the population is getting good nutrition now so you shouldn't continue to see people get much taller.
