NY Times: TCU’s post-national title game tailspin hits a new low: What happened to the Horned Frogs?

Yeah, the results with Dykes have been what you’d expect from a person who just walked off the street, inherited a super talented team, and stayed out of their way on their route to the NCG. And then he just coasted on all the momentum from that initial season.

Sometime I wonder if he's even doing the job? Is he just a spectator who believe it's all up to luck anyway?

I read a quote from him during the 2022 football season that made me go "uh oh". He talked about how he got fired at Cal and was on a plane and thinking to himself, "I guess I'll go get my real estate license", and then SMU called. That made me think he's just a sales guy who capitalizes off of whatever momentum already exists.

He supposed to be a CEO coach and talent scout, finding the assistant coaches who are on the rise and bringing them to TCU. He supposed to be working that transfer portal. But he's not doing either of those things.

The second "uh oh" moment was when Garrett Riley took the Clemson OC job, which arguably was a lateral move. Why wouldn't he stay with Team Dykes and capitalize on the NCG momentum to build a sustainable powerhouse before moving on to be a Head Coach? Well, probably because he knew Dykes was all talk, and he wanted to get out before the house of cards came tumbling down...

Ouch:

"Halfway into the 2024 season, it seems as if nothing is going right. TCU’s 30-19 loss on Friday night to Big 12 cellar-dweller Houston is just the latest example. Lately, the Horned Frogs keep finding ways to lose.
Behold a sampling of their recent misfortunes:
  • On Sept. 14, TCU coughed up a three-touchdown second-half lead and a double-digit fourth-quarter lead to lose 35-34 at home to UCF.
  • A week later, crosstown rival SMU — which TCU has played since 1915 but is choosing not to after the current series contract ends in 2025 — dropped 66 points on the Horned Frogs and beat them by 24. Dykes was ejected after earning two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties for berating the officials.
  • On Friday, the Cougars traveled to Fort Worth having not scored since Sept. 14 and holding the nation’s least productive offense in points per game, scoring rate and points per drive, according to TruMedia. The Cougars roared to 24 first-half points and an 18-point halftime lead.
“That was a total …” Dykes said Friday as he rubbed his nose, shook his head and let out a long exhale, “disaster of a football game.”'

Wonder if this is an issue where they scheme a bad game plan and lack any ability to adjust?

We've already seen that people adjust to us and the second half can be a challenge.

Garrett Riley probably got a big bump in pay to go to Clemson.

Probably he did but if it was just about money, he could have seen what TCU was willing to do to keep him and potentially played one school against the other. Instead, he just told them he was going to Clemson and walked out the door. No discussion whatsoever.

What do Billy Napier (Florida), Sonny Dykes (TCU), Sam Pittman (Arkansas), Hugh Freeze (Auburn) and Lincoln Riley (USC) have in common?

They’ve all lost seven of their last 12 games.

The pigs are coming off a big win over Tenn.
