Rough Candidate list. Some of yall will cringe but:
• Pete Kwiatkowski - UT DC (costly but lot of potential)
• Freddie Roach - Bama Assistant HC / DLC (young, experienced, great recruiter, no Tx ties)
• Tom Herman - FAU HC (stong Tx ties, affordable, is "fire to win" still there?)
• Buster Faulkner - GaTech HC (no TX ties, costly)
• GJ Kinne (young, from DFW, unproven @ major level)
• Will Stein - Oregon OC (soild choice, no Tx ties, VERY costly)

Tom Herman lost the locker room at UT monumental fail. Kinne is the only one on your list that has the skins and the bravado to position as Alpha HF HC.

Post in thread 'Football Scoop: Sources: TCU working on an extension for Sonny Dykes'
http://forum.killerfrogs.com/index....extension-for-sonny-dykes.233837/post-3221528
“It has not even been a year yet, and Coach Dykes is reported to have a 6 year contract at close to $30 million. Isn’t that more than enough for him right now, while it may be more prudent for TCU to evaluate him and an extension after another year or two? We laugh at Aggies for their impulsiveness biting them in the behind, Jimbo, and then TCU is doing this after less than one year.”

I think the extension was negotiated when Dykes was 12-0 and signed about three days after losing the Big 12 championship to Kansas State. Only a one-year extension, through 2028, but somebody here stated they thought his salary jumped to about 7.5M, to match Gundy’s, from the original 5 million per year. So about an extra 20M if true - 2.5 x 5 years plus 7.5 for the 2028 6th year.

Seems like a lot, but if you take into consideration the number of ex-head coaches that have taken consulting gigs at TCU I'm assuming where there is a will there is a way.

Sorry if this came up already, I haven't read all of this thread, but what about Jim Knowles at tOSU?

The fans there are nuts, and they're all griping about how Ryan Day can't win the big one even though the Buckeyes lost by one in a road night game to a legit national title contender. If they lose in State College Knowles will be in line for sacrificial lamb to buy Day some extra time. His defenses at Okie State were really good, and he's seen how a big time winning program operates in Columbus and how a solid program operates in the Big XII in Stillwater. I bet he'd be available for a base salary of a couple million with large incentives (say, $1M each for winning ten games, winning the conference, and winning a playoff game).

I think Knowles has not been mentioned. Checked out OSU Stats and they are 3rd in country in total defense at 251.3 YPG, 6th in cfb points allowed, 8th in cfb in rush defense. Passing defense not as good.

You have to consider that Knowles is working with much higher caliber athletes than the rest of cfb.

Additional coaches I do not think have been brought up are Jon Heacock at ISU and Joe Klanderman @ KSU. I think both of these guys are doing more with less when compared to Knowles tenure at Ok State or Ohio State.

I have mentioned Frank Cignetti Jr(Broncos) and Jim Leonhard (Packers) and I'll bring them up again.

The more-with-less formula combined with hungry and on the rise are the keys. I think we tried to go from one eminent elder statesman to another in moving from GP to Dykes. Your chances of doing that successfully aren't high. As they say, there are no "sure thing" hires, and if there are TCU can't afford them.

A hungry and on-the-rise guy that is going to move on to greener pastures at his first opportunity. I get what you are saying, you always should just get the best guy you can get I guess, but it sucks that we're going to be a stepping stone job for most any coach out there.

That's one thing we haven't experienced here in awhile and it's going to be hard to get used to it again.

Yes, it sucks, but you're better off with a good coach for two-to-three years, getting his contract bought out by the school that poaches him and needing to find someone else, than paying high dollar for someone to suck and having to buy out his contract yourself. Being a "stepping stone" job isn't absolutely exclusive of sustained success, we just haven't had to figure out how to operate a program that way (by the grace of Gary). Now we need to do that, and soon.

Now, back to reality. Realistically we are not getting rid of Sonny…no way the school funds that buyout anytime soon. They’ll ride it down more than this, and if he crash and burns completely from here on and stays down a couple more years then the school will be looking for a new AD and a new head coach.

we can't afford to wait that long. getting left out of the super conference will be more expensive in terms of lost opportunity.
