Mav’s free throw coach back in the day.

That raises a question--if free throws are as big a component of the game as special teams are in football (and I would argue they are), why doesn't anyone on the coaching staff have "free-throw" in their title? It might be Corey Santee who is primarily responsible (player development), but I suggest that the first step in developing a culture of accountability is to give specific responsibility to a member of the coaching staff--put it in the job title and provide a bonus for meeting target % marks.

It’s like a lot of sports, the massive inertia of “this is how we’ve always done it” gets in the way of new and novel ways to teach or instruct the game. I remember when Cuban made that dedicated free throw coach he got ridiculed as it being a dumb move. Then they had data that showed several historically bad FT players w sizeable improvements and folks stopped giggling.

id be curious for our team if they have similarly low % make numbers in practices or if it’s a case of in game in front of opponents and crowd that’s driving the lower numbers? (So is it a matter of better attention to it at practices in terms of qty reps, specific instructions etc. or is it more about the mental focus and breath control strategies to get the team to improve.

whatever it is, it’s been a downfall of our team for several years now. So the pattern is definitely real at this point and should be addressed.

The Dirk Mavs shot 90% under this guy. I saw his video back then where he explained everything and it was great. One thing he takes out is all of the hand slapping at the line. Guys start slapping hands before the ball reaches the rim. He takes out all of the extra gyrations that guys do before they shoot.

I propose that they remove the word “throw” from free throws. As a water polo’er, throwing a ball has the precision of throwing up after a night at the Stables. Something like “free product placement “ or “free sniping” makes more sense.

When the UTA Mavs got into a rough patch at the FT line in the early 1980's, Coach Snake LeGrand put some pressure on guys at practice. The rest of the team stood on the baseline. If a guy missed a FT, the whole team had to run a gasser. I can't remember if it worked in ensuing games. But makes sense. Put some pressure on guys in practice. Anybody can swish FT's when there's no pressure, including that 60 year old Dallas Mavs guru. Including me. But make them practice under some pressure. Just an idea.

Those early-'80s UTA teams had to be tough. If the players went for a loose ball, chances are they'd fall into the orchestra pit. Snake made sure never to show recruits the court.

I have no idea what he just said. And I don't think he does either.
