Laramie Boomerang: A no-brainer for TCU

Conference expansion and detraction returned Monday as TCU announced it will leave the Mountain West and join the Big East in July 2012.

It’s another blow to the MWC, where TCU has been one of its marquee football programs. The Horned Frogs will represent the MWC in one of the five Bowl Championship Series bowl games for the second straight season — likely the Rose Bowl.

This was a no-brainer for TCU. It joins one of the six automatic-qualifying BCS conferences in football. If it wins the Big East, which is abysmal in football right now, it plays in a BCS bowl. More importantly, it stands a far better chance of playing for a national title if it finishes the regular season undefeated, which it has the last two seasons.

TCU’s other sports will struggle in the Big East, especially men’s and women’s basketball. But that doesn’t matter when it comes to the millions of more dollars that football will make in television revenue and BCS revenue sharing in the Big East, not to mention more television exposure on ESPN’s family of networks. ...
